Born the second son of William Henry Ruef and Anna Marie Tonkinson on April 28, 1939, in Springfield, Ohio, Monsignor is preceded in death by his loving parents, and many dear family members and friends. He attended Kenwood Primary School, Hayward, and Shafer Junior High Schools and graduated from Springfield High School in 1957. Monsignor graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1961 with a B.A. in Theatre. He received an M.A. in Theatre from Indiana University in 1963. While teaching as a faculty member in the Department of Theatre at Ohio Northern, Monsignor attended law school and graduated from Ohio Northern University Petit College of Law in 1967 with a J.D. Monsignor departed the Attorney General's Office in August, 1975 to study theology at the Franciscan Centre, Canterbury, England and the Pontifical College Josephinum. Monsignor was ordained to the priesthood at Saint Joseph Cathedral on June 3, 1978, by Bishop Edward J. Hermann. Ordained a Transitional Deacon in December of 1977, Monsignor was assigned to the Diocesan Tribunal and served for 37 years as Defender of the Bond, Diocesan Judge, and 20 years as Judicial Vicar. Monsignor's pastoral assignments were a Diaconate year at St. Matthew the Apostle Parish (Gahanna) from 1977-1978; Associate Pastor of Saint Catharine of Siena Parish (Columbus) from 1978-1982; resident priest at St. Matthias Parish (Columbus) in 1985, and St. Joseph Cathedral (Columbus) from 1985-1991; and Pastor of Holy Name Parish (Columbus) from 1992-2009. "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Heaven is richer. Memories of times together - especially the Catholic Schools Gala 11/6/14 - will be deeply cherished. He did the job the Lord appointed him to do and now enjoys the rewards of his labors. Requiescat in pace!

Monsignor was a fabulous Homilist and a holy priest. I will cherish forever the joy he exuded when he led us into the Preface Dialogue at daily Mass. Gone from our midst but never to be forgotten.

For the family of Monsignor James Ruef,
Please accept the sympathy of our family upon the Monsignor's release from life. He is known to all of you as Monsignor Ruef, but I know him only as Jim.
Our lives were intertwined the summer of 1970, when I was cast as Catherine Rives (Emmett) and my husband, Don, played General Robert E. Lee in the historical drama, THE BIRTH OF DIXIE. Our 8 year-old daughter, Ann, played a young school child. We acted together, we played together, we had a most wonderful summer together. In my role as Catherine, I married Daniel Decatur Emmett (Jim Ruef). Emmett wrote the song, “Dixie.” Our performances took place in Mt. Vernon, Ohio where we all made friends for life.
The Monsignor was an incredible gift to the Catholic Church. He was an immensely talented, brilliant, loving, good man. How lucky his parisioners were. I will forever miss this person.
I would like to think that when we look up into the sky and see the stars, that one of them zipping across the horizon is Jim. Shakespeare said it best in ROMEO AND JULIET:
"When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heav'n so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun."

God Bless the family
Affectionately,
Jill Eliot
