Joseph Casey Obituary

Casey, Joseph "Jay"
Jay was born in Marion, Ohio on November 27, 1948 and passed away on August 13, 2021. He is survived by sons, Jose of Charleston, South Carolina, Dan of Phoenix, Arizona; daughters, Maria of Nosara, Costa Rica and Clare of Los Angeles, California; and granddaughter, Adelina Ackermann; as well as sisters, Kathy of Elyria, Ohio, Mary of Columbus, Ohio; and brothers, Jim of Pensacola, Florida, Jack of Marion, Ohio and Michael of Columbus, Ohio. He was raised in Marion, Ohio where he was an avid athlete, playing golf and basketball, running track and field and competitive swimming. After graduating from Miami University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Studies, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, he joined the Peace Corps where he served as a volunteer in Chota Valley, Ecuador. It was in Ecuador where he met his wife, Myriam and was married for 28 years. Jay had a thirst for life, adventure, and travel. Following his service with the Peace Corps, he worked for the Catholic Relief Services where he, Myriam, and sons Jose and Dan lived throughout Latin America. Following the birth of his daughter Maria in Ecuador, Jay moved the family to Athens, Ohio where he received his MBA from Ohio University. Soon after, he settled with the family in Columbus, Ohio, where his daughter Clare was born. He spent the next 25 years working in International Business Development for Allied Mineral Products, Tech Rubber, and United Refractories, before moving on to his consulting business, Casey & Associates, that he would continue for the rest of his life. His career took him around the world, building friendships that he kept for decades. Throughout his professional career he maintained his passion for philanthropy as a member of the Council of World Affairs in Columbus, and his kids favorite coach. Jay was fueled by competition and gifted with a tremendous amount of endurance that led him to complete more than 30 marathons, countless triathlons and 3 Ironman Triathlons in Kona, Hawaii. He loved his annual TOSRV bike tour that was a tradition with friends and family for more than 20 years. He also loved golf and had many fond memories of his days playing at Marion & Wedgewood Country Clubs. Jay was larger than life. He was a kind and sincere man with open arms and an open heart who will be missed by all. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, August 21 at 1pm at Our Lady of Peace, 20 E. Dominion Blvd, Columbus, Ohio 43214.

I knew Jay while a Peace Corp Volunteer in Ecuador in the early 1970s. We had many adventures both in the Chota Valley and all about the Province of Imbabura. The many fiestas in Ibarra, Otavalo and the Chota. I cherish a photo of us two on a park bench in Ibarra from 1972... Vaya con dios amigo siempre en mis pensimientos de ayer... Juan Pato

My deepest condolences to the family. Truly a pleasure knowing Jay and calling him a member of our family at ICP all these years. We had many travels together and he never met a stranger along the way. He had a special knack connecting with people and remembering names and details about their lives. Jay was great guy and friend to all. Peace be with you, Ciao y Adios.

Rest In Peace Jay. Condolences to your immediate family and the Casey family brothers and sisters, esp. Michael and Mary, who I know. Let your smile and light shine upon us all. I'll be praying for your soul and remembering you and your family next Sat. in absentia as I'll be at another funeral out-of-town. Peace Jay and Blessings upon your family and friends during this time of their grief and suffering. Amen
