I am Dylan Oliveira detweiler, Steve´s grandson. Although he died while I was 2, I´m sure he was a great guy.

Steve was a great guy. We met running races while my daughter was a student at Florida.

I beat Steve during our first race and believe he beat me in all our races from that point forward.

Steve was a great competitor in a positive, friendly way.

At some point, I suffered from undiagnosed afib. I remember a training run on a Sunday with his running group and really struggling to finish.

Steve held back to insure I didn´t get lost despite my pitiful pace.

Just a great guy I had the pleasure of getting to know during these runs.

And, ps my high school chemistry teacher gave me a passing grade if I promised to not take her physics course.

I met Steve while running races in Gainesville.
Steve was a very competitive in a positive, fun way.
I beat Steve in our first race which was the first and only time. During our next race he located me and introduced
himself. We ran 2 or 3 races after that and I enjoyed the competition.

All and all a great guy. I missed running with Steve after he passed.

I am so saddened to learn of Steve's death. Steve was a good friend, whom I first met our senior year in college. The best word that I can think of to describe him is 'whimsical'. He had a unique way of looking at the world and never ceased to be amused by it. He remained a good and close friend over the first twenty or so years out of college, but, sadly, afterwards, we drifted apart. Nonetheless, my memories of him are as strong as ever ... in large part due to his larger than life personality. We will all miss him so very much.

The picture below was taken 38 years ago at my wedding, where Steve served as one of my ushers.

I remember Steve as such a kind and sincere person. He was also so humble about his contributions to physics -- and had some very beautiful and original insights.

He was an introvert with the voice of a stentor and an ex-rugby player with a gentle nature! He would walk down the passage faster than anyone else, but one could always feel at ease with him.

He strictly did not believe in free will, and even rebelled against Quantum Mechanics while saying in typical honesty ('but I don't know any better theory to replace it!') So he would say sincerely that his life went as it had to go, and we were blessed that kindness&thoughtfulness were the way he was.

Steve and I were good friends in graduate school and during the time when he worked for Chandra. I will miss his ever positive attitude and his great gift for making hard ideas simple. Jim Eraker

Prof. Detweiler proctored my Preliminary Exams in physics, and told my buddy and I which one of us got the higher score. I will miss seeing him around the Department.
