Seymour Cohen Obituary

Seymour CohenSeymour Cohen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, cousin, friend and inspiration to many, passed away in his home in Beverly Hills on October 28, 2021 after living an amazingly full life of 98 years. Seymour grew up in Boyle Heights and remained connected throughout the years to the Roosevelt High School alumni community. During WWII he was accepted into the ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program) and proudly served in the Signal Corps while stationed in the Philippines, then attended USC Business School while working and developing Westland Printing Company with his wife Shirley Gootkin Cohen at his side. He was passionate about his trade, tirelessly working long hours to make the business a success. Perhaps the greatest tribute to his long professional career are the lasting friendships he created with many of his employees who remained present throughout his long life. After retiring he devoted much of his time to tutoring children for the Beverly Hills School District and to peer counseling for the Maple Center. Seymour loved LA, the beach, travelling with family and friends, dancing, Sinatra and storytelling. He had an open mind, an open heart and an open ear - truly interested in others, his humble and generous presence left an imprint on all who knew him. Seymour was always ready for an adventure; he loved life and remained an optimist to the very end. His spirit will live on in our hearts. He was predeceased by Shirley, his wife of 65 years, and is survived by his daughters Eileen and Linda (Vincent), and his grandchildren Jeremy and Arden. May we suggest making a contribution to Jewish World Watch to honor Seymour Cohen and his love for Jewish tradition, or to Heal the Bay so that future generations will be able to continue to enjoy the Pacific Ocean he so adored. I was sorry I could not make the funeral but was very grateful that I was able to stream it. I thought everyone who spoke truly captured his personality and strength.
I know how much my dad and Uncle Norman valued their special brotherly relationship with Seymour. He was a very important member of the family and he will be missed.
