It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Roy Dillard, 80 years old, who peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his wife of 36 years and many of his family.
John was born on Feb. 14, 1944, to the late Walter Roy Dillard and Grace Isabella (Schlundt) Dillard. He was a devoted husband, father, papa, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John married his beloved wife, Joann Helen Sobecki, on June 17, 1988. Together, they had nine children, Rhonda Dillard, Colleen (Don) Stimley, Arleen O'Shea, David Dillard, Kathleen (Larry) Gallion, Joleen (Jerry) Jackson, Pauleen (Steve) Hocker, Roseleen (Bryan) Strother and Eileen (John) Smiertelny. He was also a proud papa of 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who all survive. John's heart of gold and love for his family was boundless, and his legacy lives on in each of them.
John worked at Bethlehem Steel for 33 years, where he was nicknamed JR and became known for his unmatched work ethic, and hands of steel. After he retired he enjoyed taking road trips, telling stories and spending time with his family. For many years, John ran a booth at a local flea market, where his friendly demeanor and charm made him a favorite among customers.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Dillard and Donald Dillard; his brother-in-law, Mark Sobecki; and sister-in-law, Georgianne Schroeder. John is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Louis and Patrick Sobecki; sister-in-law, Debi Sobecki; and many other extended family members and friends.

John had a four wheel drive vehicle back in the 1978 snow storm. He volunteered to dive MCPD officers to calls. Rode with him for several long days. Very nice person and he loved Michigan City. Good memories I kept for 47 years! Prayers and Rest in Peace John.
