Wayne Woodside Obituary

Wayne "Woody" Mabry Woodside, age 75, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 25, 2017, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 18, 1941, in Dallas, Texas, to Ida Ethel (Beach) and Eugene Mabry Woodside. Woody was a 1959 graduate of W. H. Adamson High School and went on to graduate from UT Arlington in 1963 with a BS in Electrical Engineering after which he served active duty, with honor and distinction, in United States Marine Corps. Upon returning to Dallas, he obtained an MBA from Southern Methodist University in 1976. Woody also served in the United States Military Reserves. Woody truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; hard work, in-depth discussions with colleagues, friends, and family, hunting, and spending time with his grandkids. As a child, Woody held a job at the Dallas Zoo and he proudly achieved Eagle Scout. He also gave back as a young father and coached little league football while always remaining an avid supporter of Boy Scouts. Woody also loved hunting exotic game and collecting classic cars. He was always sharing pictures of his cars and trophies with everyone he met. Woody also rarely missed the weekly 'Safety Meeting' at "The Bar", with his fellow Doodlebuggers talking about the old days, politics, guns, and telling tall tales. In his leisure you could usually find him on his riding mowers whether it be at home, the office, or the lake. Woody had an uncanny ability to reach people deeply and positively; he touched many hearts and souls throughout his wondrous life. More often than not, Woody's advice was subtle, succinct and perfect, often expressed in a way that would make you think and, of course, make you laugh. Woody had an illustrious career in the oil and gas industry impacting the lives of many colleagues, geophysicists, and the geophysics community worldwide. He was known as a mentor, teacher, friend, benefactor and role model working alongside some of the industries experts in the field of geophysics. Woody worked on almost every continent in the world while working for companies such as GSI and NORPAC. While at GSI, one of the positions Woody held and excelled at, was the systems Engineer on Advanced Scientific Computing, building some of the world's first large-scale computer systems. He was also a member of the World Wide Problem Solving Team, which allowed him to travel the world designing, fixing and solving problems, and, of course, teaching. Woody started one of his businesses in Midland, Texas in 1984, Trend Technology, and continued to mentor and teach many young seismic data processing geophysicists, building computers, solving problems and developing numerous cutting-edge software applications. Woody was an active member of the Society of Exploration of Geophysicists and the Permian Basin Geophysical Society and was licensed by the State of Texas as a Geoscientist. Woody is preceded in death by his brother David, and his wife Jane. Woody is survived by his daughter Cindy and her husband, Ruben Madrid and their four children; Woody's grandchildren, Alysia, Katelyn, Michael and Danielle, and Woody's stepdaughter Shannon West and her son Robert "Rocky" Hoffman. Family, friends, and others whose lives Woody touched are invited to the Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy, Midland, Texas, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017, for a visitation, to reminisce, grieve, support each other and, of course, just chat. Services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017, the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Woody will be laid to rest at the Grove Hill Cemetery, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas Texas, Monday, October 2, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. Online condolences may be offered at www.ellisfunerals.com

My cousin was one of kind type of guy. As a young girl I watch him do things
around our grandparents home in Dallas. I had a lot of respect for him. He even helped my aunts in Dallas that never married; overseeing their home and themselves as they needed him and they lived in Dallas.
There wasn't much my cousin couldn't do. I love you always.

I have known Woody both personally and professionally for nearly 40 years. He was always the consummate professional and a loyal friend - the kind of a guy that would do just about anything for you. Woody's hallmark was his practicality and "outside the box" solutions to tough geophysical problems, whether seismic acquisition, seismic processing, or just plain life. He used to tell me (at 70 years old) that he was "having the time of his life." You could see it in the twinkle in his eye and his hearty laugh. Safety Meetings won't be the same without him.
