Dwight L. Gentry, 93, died March 5, 2013 in Conway, SC.
Dr. Gentry was born November 16, 1919, on the family farm in Roxboro, NC. He graduated from Elon College, and then joined the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. He attained the rank of Captain, and as an infantry platoon leader and company commander, earned a Silver Star, four Bronze Stars, and four Purple Hearts. Most recently, Dr. Gentry was awarded France's Legion of Honor, which is the highest decoration awarded by the people of France.
Upon returning from the war, Gentry went on to earn an MBA from Northwestern University and a PhD from the University of Illinois. He was a professor at the University of Miami, University of Illinois, Wake Forest University, the University of Maryland and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. He also served as Associate Dean at the University of Maryland and as Director of the Graduate School of Business at UNC-Greensboro. He authored three books and numerous articles.
Dr. Gentry met Alice McGirt, an Army nurse, when he was hospitalized for serious wounds received on the battlefield. They were married for over 65 years prior to her death in 2011.
Dr. Gentry is survived by his son Dwight L. Gentry, Jr., of Myrtle Beach; his daughter Nancy Gentry Glenn of Ashburn, VA; brothers Robert and Kelly and sister Libby; his grandchildren Laurin Gentry Titus, Catherine McGirt Gentry and Jennifer Woodard Small; and five great grandchildren: Charlie, Mac, Madelyn, Aubrey, and Will.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Eden Fund of Kingston Nursing Center in Conway, SC.
