Reverend Abraham Temoney, Sr. earned his heavenly wings on Sunday morning, June 23, 2024 at Lexington Medical Center in West
Columbia, SC. He was married to his loving and faithful wife, First Lady Agnes Wilson Temoney, for 51 years. Reverend Temoney was born in Mayesville, SC, on May 21, 1951 to the late Robert, Sr. and Vermell McCauley Temoney.
Reverend Temoney graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Elliott, SC. He attended Morris College in
Sumter, SC. He also attended L.B. Burgess School of Religion in Florence, SC.
Reverend Temoney joined Beulah African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in
Sumter, SC at an early age and accepted the Lord as his personal Savior. At the age of sixteen years old, Reverend Temoney taught the Adult Sunday School Class. He served as the President of the Young Adult Choir at Sweet Beulah. As a member of the Trustee Board, Reverend Temoney worked faithfully for the Lord. He had a continuous love and compassion for working and caring for the House of the Lord. In 1973, Reverend Temoney answered his call into the Ministry. His initial sermon was titled: "Clean hands and a pure heart." His sermon reflected the life that he lived throughout his ministry.
In 1979, Reverend Temoney was appointed to St. John AME Church in Longs, SC, where he and First Lady Agnes Temoney hit the ground running. His motto was "Always make a difference in the name of the Lord." Reverend Temoney was blessed to Pastor in the Northeast Annual Conference for three years and the Columbia Annual Conference for thirty-nine years. He pastored at the following churches: LaGree AME in
Sumter, SC, Reeder Point AME in
Columbia, SC, Mount Sinai AME in Elgin, SC, St. Luke AME in Eastover, SC and James Chapel AME in Lugoff, SC. The Lord blessed his heart and hands to work hard for the kingdom of God. Reverend Temoney completed the following duties: built restrooms in the church, added porches on several churches, installed air conditioning units in one church, put roofs on two churches, and bricked the front entrance as well as installed the ramp of another church. Reverend Temoney never took the credit for the work because he was too busy always giving God the Praise. He pastored for over forty-two years in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 2020, Reverend Temoney retired from the active Itinerant ministry of the AME Church.
Reverend Temoney was a very hard worker who was employed full time while also ministering the word of God. He was a dedicated employee for B.L. Montague Company for four years in
Sumter, SC. He faithfully worked for Sunbelt Distributors in
Sumter, SC for many years. He was also employed with Georgia Pacific in
Columbia, SC for ten years. His last employment was with the City of Sumter for twenty-three years. He served as one of the supervisors for Parks and Recreation. Reverend Temoney was well known for his jovial spirit and ministering to incarcerated men. He treated them with love, dignity and respect. He uplifted them and provided hope for their future.
Reverend Temoney loved to watch western movies and enjoyed working outside in his yard. He was dedicated to his family and was the life of the family gatherings. Reverend Temoney always kept it real with everyone he met. He enjoyed meeting and helping everyone in his community. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
