Ada Louise Smith Wright, passed peacefully on December 26, 2024. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on August 16, 1936 to George H. and Ruth M. (Connolly) Smith. She lived her whole life in the Cambridge area, moving to Arlington after she completed college at Framingham State in 1958. In Arlington, she raised her two children, Liz and Hugh, with the loving assistance of her parents. In the late 1960s, she began substituting in the Arlington School system and was soon offered a full-time job at Ottoson Jr. High where she worked for several decades. In the 1970s, she received a master's degree from Boston State University. After her mother's death, Ada and her father bought a cottage in Ogunquit, Maine where they, and the rest of the family, spent many wonderful summers. After retirement, she doted on her three grandchildren: George, James, and William. Though they lived hours away, they came to visit in Arlington or Ogunquit as often as they could. She also rekindled an elementary school romance for several years.
Fiercely independent, Ada lived alone in Arlington after Liz and Hugh moved out until August, 2024 when she moved to Hugh's home in Hoosick Falls, New York where Hugh, his wife Rebecca, and son William took very good care of her. Her furry companion Fluffy also remained by her side for her last months. She died very peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Ada leaves her two children, Elizabethada Wright (of Duluth, Minnesota) and Hugh Wright (of Hoosick Falls, New York), their spouses (Scott Segee and Rebecca Ference Wright), and her three grandchildren, George Howard Segee-Wright (of Nancy, France) and his partner Julianna Marie French, James Scott Segee-Wright (of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands), and William Wright (of Hoosick Falls, New York).
Visiting Hours will also be held in the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut Street, ARLINGTON, on Sunday, December 29th from 5pm-7pm. Her Funeral Service will be celebrated in the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut Street, Arlington, on Monday, December 30th at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited to gather from 9am – 10am. Burial will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

Cynthia Lees (formerly Cindy Blinn)

December 30, 2024

Ada Wright was a Light in this world, welcoming me to the Ottoson as a new teacher so many years ago. I recall her smile and I can hear her voice, "Well Cindy," as she shook her head at another of me hare-brained ideas. A gentle and understanding teacher for students of all ages, I'm grateful for having crossed Ada's path in this lifetime.

I'm adding her name to a global international multi-faith prayer thread, to hold her in prayer for the next 49 days as she transitions to her service in the astral realm.

May her light on this Earth continue to shine in our memories of her for days and years to come, as long as those of us alive to remember her, give voice to our thoughts now and again.
