Ada Metz Swartley, 94, of Souderton, PA (formerly of Earlington, PA) went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Souderton Mennonite Homes-Living Branches Senior Living Community.
Ada was the beloved wife of the late John L. Swartley for 64 years. She was born at home in Montgomery County to the late Abram Metz and the late Eva (Alderfer) Metz.
Ada's early to mid-adult years were spent joyfully caring for her husband, children, and home. A skilled seamstress who made clothes for the entire family, she also taught sewing classes. She was later employed for more than 10 years by the Souderton division of Provident Bookstores, where she enjoyed helping other book lovers and took great pride in learning the new technology of the time. After retirement, Ada volunteered faithfully at the Care and Share Thrift Shoppes in Souderton. In her spare time, she enjoyed biking, gardening, reading, painting, cooking, canning, and baking. Ada loved art and music, played piano at home, led singing at church, and sang in the church choir. Her children remember their home was always filled with art, flowers, and song. She was a people person who loved nothing more than a good visit with family, friends, and neighbors. Ada was a member of Salford Mennonite Church.
Ada is survived by two daughters, Christine Schwab (Greensboro, NC) and Laurel Landis Alleger and husband, Richard (Harleysville, PA); a son, J. Ed Swartley and wife, Teresa (Elkhart, IN); five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Metz and husband, Ken Seitz (Harrisonburg, VA); a brother, Abe Metz and wife, Judy (Mountain Home, AR); a sister-in-law, Mary Swartley (Hesston, KS); and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ada was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Lapp; and a brother, Floyd Metz.
