Agelike "Kiki" Maria Mavodones, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2nd, in Douglas, Massachusetts. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by her family and loved ones. Her granddaughter, Maia, was singing hymns to her.
Agelike was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, to Louis and Argiro Kustas. Louis Kustas immigrated from Kythonia, Greece, and Argiro Kavrouthakis immigrated from the island of Syros, Greece. Agelike was the youngest in her family, and was predeceased by her older brothers, Nicholas Louis Kustas, and George Louis Kustas. She is survived by her daughter Catina Mavodones and husband, Michael Daly, daughter Nike Mavodones Beaudry and husband Anthony Beaudry, son Andrew Kustas and wife Noelle Kustas, and youngest daughter Eirene Mavodones. She is survived by five grandchildren: Maia and Zacharias Beaudry, Zoe Daly, and Jonah and Timothy Libens-Mavodones. She has many beloved nieces and nephews. Agelike graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1951. She attended Elmira College where she explored her love of languages, graduating with a degree in French and Latin in 1955. Agelike attended Boston University for one semester, and a summer session for language study at Middlebury College.
While at Boston University, she met her future husband, Zinas Mavodones, of Portland, Maine. They were married on September 29th, 1957, at the Holy Church of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church on Academy Street in Poughkeepsie, New York, and moved to Agelike's hometown to start their teaching careers. Agelike began teaching French and Latin in the Hyde Park School District and later continued teaching French and Latin in the Pine Plains School District as a high school teacher.
Agelike and Zinas welcomed four children: Catina, Nike, Andrew, and Eirene. Agelike dedicated her life, following her teaching career, to raising her family. She was an incredibly accomplished cook, with a love for baking breads and Greek pastries. She was also a seamstress, and an advanced knitter. Agelike devoted her life to her church community, in the new Greek Orthodox Church of Kimisis Tis Theotokou, as adult and junior choir director, and also as a Greek youth dance group director.
Agelike was a trained pianist and organist, and used her talents at church with the choir. She had a beautiful alto voice, often singing and performing on the organ for many weddings.
In her later years, Agelike assisted her husband Zinas, at the Poughkeepsie City Schools Continuing Adult Education Program. They worked tirelessly to offer evening classes and degree programs such as GED and ESL instruction for the surrounding Poughkeepsie community.
Agelike dearly cherished her time with her grandchildren, and continued her passion for knitting, making many beautiful sweaters and Christmas stockings for her family. She also enjoyed spending time at knitting circles, and perusing knitting shops in her travels.
Agelike and Zinas loved to visit Greek churches in other areas, often attending Greek festivals to celebrate their history and Greek heritage.
Together, Agelike and Zinas wrote a detailed history of their parish at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Poughkeepsie, New York, a yearlong project of which they were very proud. Agelike was a beautiful vocalist, musician, Greek dancer, and a beloved wife to her husband Zeke, a mother, and a cherished Yiayia. She will be most remembered for her patience, her kindness, her beautiful smile, and unwavering faith.
