Alan Bushey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Toale Brothers Funeral Home & Crematory - Colonial Chapel - Sarasota on Mar. 6, 2026.
Alan Scott Bushey ("Scott"), born in Peoria, Illinois, lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional achievement, and generous civic engagement. Scott was notorious for his quick wit - he could make anyone laugh - his appreciation for music, education and the arts, and his deep commitment to his family.

Scott graduated from Augustana College and was a graduate of the inaugural MBA class at Stanford University with a scholarship from Alfred Sloan. He served his country as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Supply Corps of the United States Naval Reserve, including active duty with the Sixth Fleet from 1954 to 1957.

He went on to build an esteemed career in New York, serving as Senior Vice President of U.S. Life. After his retirement, he settled in Sarasota, Florida, where he became an active and valued member of the local arts and cultural community.

A lifelong supporter of education and cultural exchange, Scott devoted considerable time and energy to philanthropic and civic causes. Beginning in 1993, he served on the Board of Directors of the British Schools and Universities Foundation, holding several leadership roles over the years, including Honorary Secretary, Director of Scholar Relations, President, and Chairman.

Scott was also a member of the Board of Trustees of The Caledonian Foundation USA, a member of the Sarasota Yacht Club, and a Sarasota Opera Co-Producer. In addition, he volunteered with the Sarasota Reading Festival with his dear friend, Joan Wood. Earlier in his life, he served on the Board of Directors of The Ecumenical Institute in Chicago from 1963 to 1974. He also served as the family historian, cherishing relationships with extended family in the US, and internationally, especially in Germany.

Scott is survived by his sister, Ellyn (her husband David, deceased); nieces Cynthia Drummond and Deborah Smith (husband Kendall); and grandniece/grandnephews David, Nicholas, and Kristen. He is also survived by the family of his brother, Don Bushey (wife Jean, both deceased): nieces and nephews Pete Bushey (wife Susan), Martie Wartalski (husband Steve), David Bushey, and Barbara Bushey; grandnieces and grandnephews Matthew, James, Tina, Rusty, Carie, Alisha, and Bridget; and many great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

A visitation will be held on Monday, March 23rd, from 9:30am until 10am, at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 N Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34236.
