Albert Daniel Thomas Jr. passed away on June 27, 2024, at Delnor Hospital. Born April 17, 1951 in Evanston, the son of Albert D and Edith Ann (Neiglick) Thomas Sr. Al was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend.
Al lived with Jesus in his heart. He was a BSF student (bible study fellowship). BSF is a study of the whole Bible across the country at the same time. Al said that BSF left a big impact on his life.
Al's life was filled with science, computers, nature, adventure, music, photography, biking, and camaraderie.
As a young boy, Al's heart belonged to the great outdoors, camping, and being involved with the Boy Scouts. He also had a love for music, particularly jazz band. Al participated in school bands from junior high school through his time in Elmhurst college, playing his trombone.
Al's love for nature extended beyond scouting. An avid camper, he reveled in the simplicity of life in the open sky. From the cedars of Glacier National Park to the rugged landscapes of northern Canada. Alaska was one of Al's favorite adventures and places to visit. He also visited many, if not all the National parks. Al would pitch his tent and find solace in the great outdoors.
It was on the water that Al truly thrived. Kayaking became his passion, and he navigated, rivers, lakes, and coastlines with grace. Whether gliding through calm, waters, or conquering white capped waves, Al felt at home in his kayak.
Al's legacy extended beyond the natural world. During his 20+ years at Fermi lab, he played a pivotal role in growth and operations. While there, he made many lifelong friends.
As a cat lover, Al understood that feline companions were like potato chips -you couldn't just have one. His home was filled with the antics of his four cats.
Al's memory will live on in his beautiful photographs of all the nature scenes from his travels. His memory lives in our hearts. May he rest in peace.
Al is survived by his sister, Patricia (Thomas) Haeffner; nephew, Christopher (Tammy) Haeffner and son Thomas, all of Sycamore; niece, Megan Haeffner-Balch (Shawn Balch) and children, Micah, Sawyer, Sigrid, and Maren, all of Kingston.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Larry Haeffner; parents.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Olson's Quiram Sycamore Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178, followed by memorial service.
