Alberto “Al/Nonno” Maitino, 87, of Stoneham, MA, formerly Watertown, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. He was surrounded by family and leaves behind a life rich with laughter, hard work, love, and great food.
Born in Miranda, Italy, Al came to America in search of opportunity where he worked tirelessly as a laborer and married the love of his life, Evelyn (Inglese) Maitino. Though hardworking by trade, his greatest gifts were his warmth, his generosity, and the way he made everyone feel special. Al was never without a story to tell, a laugh to share, or a glass of red wine to raise in good company.
Al lived with heart, humor, and just enough stubbornness to make him unforgettable. His greatest joy was family: his daughter Gabriella Maitino, his son Al Maitino, daughter-in-law Becky, and above all his three grandchildren - Rocco, Marcello, and Francesca, who brought light to his later years. Though stern at times as a father, he softened into pure joy as a Nonno, creating memories his grandchildren will cherish forever.
He loved life’s simple pleasures...early morning fishing at Walden Pond, cooking pasta e fagioli or roadside mushrooms for family and friends. He treasured Saturday 4PM Mass where he’d arrive hours early just to claim his spot and catch up with friends. Even after losing Evelyn 18 years ago, a loss he carried always, Al remained fiercely independent filling his days with trips to the cemetery, grocery stores, time at the Italian clubs, visiting friends, and finally settling down to make dinner!
To know him was to be welcomed into his circle. He was genuine, kind, mischievous, and golden-hearted. His presence made everyone feel seen and valued, and he will be dearly missed.
Al leaves behind a family who adored him, countless friends, and a lifetime of stories to be retold around dinner tables for years to come. Though his chair is now empty, we take comfort knowing he is reunited with Evelyn, likely cooking, singing, and dancing together once again.
Ciao for now, Nonno. You were truly one of the greats!
