YOUNGSTOWN - Alex Anthony Panno, 98, of the city's west side, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in the comfort of his home.
Alex, who was affectionately known as Al, was born June 11, 1926, in Youngstown, a son of the late Felice Panno and Rosa Cuccaro Panno and was a lifelong area resident.
A proud graduate of East High School's Class of 1944, Al was promptly drafted into the United States Army and served his country with dedication during World War II. Upon returning home, he embarked on a long and fulfilling career at General Fireproofing, where he worked until retirement. Al's work ethic and desire to stay active led him to take on a position at an Ohio State Liquor Store, where he continued to connect with his community.
Al was a man of many passions, and his love for bocce was well-known. As a member of both the ARCO Club and the MVR Club, he spent countless hours on the bocce courts, honing his skills and sharing camaraderie with fellow players. His competitive spirit extended beyond bocce; Al was a formidable opponent in cornhole and card games, and he enjoyed betting on sports and horse racing, often walking away with a win.
A devout member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown, Al found spiritual solace and a deep sense of community in his faith, which guided him throughout his life's journey. His faith was central to who he was, providing strength during life's challenges and joy in its celebrations.
Al was blessed with nearly 50 years of marriage to his beloved wife and dancing partner, Elizabeth Cappitte Panno. The couple married on December 27, 1974, and together they traveled, danced, and participated in bocce tournaments, cherishing each moment. Al's legacy is rich with love, laughter, and the joy of spirited competition, leaving a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; his two daughters, Deborah Panno, with whom he resided, and Georgeann Rodriquez of Austintown; nine grandchildren, Frank (Christine) Garcia, Georgeann (Michael) Dirando, Jennifer (James) Hunt, Tabitha Schewirey, Anthony Garcia, Sherri Lynn (Alan) Greathouse, Philip (Bri) Garcia, Elizabeth Schewirey, and Luis Serrano; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Corky Barone of Canfield; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Al's life was rich with love, laughter, and the joy of friendly competition. His memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; his son, George Schewirey; son-in-law, Elias Rodriguez; siblings, Mary Barone, George Panno, and Phil Panno; sisters-in-law, Zoey Panno and Eva Panno; and two infant twin grandsons, Christopher and Timothy.
Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Kinnick Funeral Home 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown where a funeral service will be held at noon.
