Alexander Danko, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2023. He was born on May 1, 1941 in Grand Rapids, MI to Alex and Christine Danko. Al's life was marked by his dedication to family, friends and the community.
Al served four years in the United States Air Force after high school where he had the opportunity to work on and fly in Air Force One during the Kennedy administration. After his service, he entered the IBEW Local 58 apprentice program where he was recognized as Apprentice of the Year. He later became a Master Electrician and was a 58 year member of Local 58. During that time, he worked at Wayne State University, Stroh Brewery Company and for various electrical contractors in the Metro Detroit area. He finished his career working at Conti Electric. He interviewed applicants to the apprenticeship program and trained many new electricians over his career. He enjoyed the challenges of his work and there was no electrical problem that Al could not solve.
Al was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Madeleine whom he had been married to for 56 years. Al was a proud father to four children, Theresa Garvonic (Mike), Sandy Ocholik (Bret), Paul Danko (Anne), and Karen Sharplin (Scott), and was a special grandfather to 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was a dedicated family man, and willing to help in any situation or home project. He loved hosting and attending family get togethers and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's activities and events.
Al was a life-long learner. He was an avid reader, especially science fiction and enjoyed keeping up with the latest technology. He also loved traveling, swimming in his backyard pool, going to the movies and sudoku. Al was a committed volunteer for the Clinton-Macomb Library and precinct worker for the Clinton Township Election Department for many years.
Al was a remarkable man whose life was defined by his deep love and commitment to family. He was always there for anyone and at any time he was needed. Al was patient, kind and steadfast in his calm demeanor. He had a never-ending positive attitude and always had a smile on his face. He was our rock. He was an inspiration, source of wisdom and a great example of how to live life.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be truly missed.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in November. Memorial donations can be made to the ALS Association at donate.als.org.
