Fred Hennet, a hardworking man with a love for motorcycles and storytelling, died on the morning of Tuesday, May 9th, 2023. He was 80 years old. He died finally of heart failure under the compassionate care of the women of Slate Belt Nursing in Bangor.
Born on March 21, 1943 in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Fred was the son of Agnes Williams Hennet and Alfred Paul Hennet Sr. He spoke with respect for his father who had earned the bronze star for bravery during WWII and with love and admiration for his mother who worked outside the house for decades while raising a family.
Given the number of masons on his mom's side of the family, Fred spent his younger years mason tending. He also spent time as a youth living with extended family and laboring on their farms.
Physical labor prepared him well for his time playing football for Stroudsburg High School. It was also at Stroudsburg High School where Fred and a buddy flipped over a teacher's convertible. This prank earned them a short stint in the Monroe County Jail during non-school hours. It was walking down Main Street in the evening to the jail from the high school where he really got to know his first wife, Marjorie Drake, as she had been assigned the task of walking the two scofflaws back to jail at the end of the day.
Marjorie and Fred would marry in July of 1962 and raised three boys, first in Stroudsburg and then later in the West End in Effort. During his time in Stroudsburg Fred served as a volunteer firefighter for Stroudsburg and later Stroud Township. Later in Effort Fred wrangled a motley crew of farm animals and enjoyed horse back riding with his sons.
Fred aways tried his best to provide for his family. He worked for many years at Patterson Kelley in East Stroudsburg as a shop manager. After Patterson Kelley moved its labor operations to Mexico in the 1980s, Fred worked mostly driving machinery or hauling freight.
Fred enjoyed motorcycles and made sure his sons had mini-bikes. He even raced on enduro bikes in the 70s with some buddies. Fred was a jack of all trades and did well enough at carpentry, masonry, farming, tinkering with cars and hunting. He was a decent cook having worked doing short order at Besecker's Diner in Snydersville during high school.
He had a collection of John Wayne movies and appreciated a time when the History Channel was about history. Fred was easy to be around and could chat easily with folks from all walks of life.
In his last decade of life, Fred was cared for with love and attention by his second wife Charlene Serfass and their son Mike at their home in Saylorsburg. Fred always tried to be a loving father and a devoted husband.
Fred was married and divorced twice, and had four sons in total. He is survived by all his sons, Paul Hennet of Stroudsburg, Chuck Hennet of Effort, Dan Hennet of Virginia Beach and Mike Hennet of Saylorsburg.
Fred is also survived by all his siblings, Catherine Seaman (partner David) of Spring City, Lynn Bush of Hanover Township, Thomas Hennet (wife Lynn) of Stroudsburg, June Berger (husband Thom) of Brodheadsville and Jean Hennet of Lowell, VT.
Fred is survived by his eight grandchildren Zachary and Aaron Hennet, Oliver Sage and Sonya Hennet, Ethan and Dylan Hennet and Phoenix and Lyte Hennet. Fred also had one great-grandchild, Matthew Hennet.
