Alice Ann Hypes, 92, of Mullens, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in the same home where she was born, after a long illness.
Born in Mullens, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Buford E. Hypes, Sr. and Annie Taylor Hypes. Alice graduated from Mullens High School in 1950 and earned her teaching degree in Business from Concord College. She dedicated 39 years to education, teaching business machines, shorthand, and typing. Her teaching career began at Itmann Grade School, continued at Oceana High and Pineville High, and concluded at Mullens High School (MHS), where she was a beloved senior sponsor and organized many graduation ceremonies. She had a deep affection for MHS and took pride in teaching typing—skills that many of her students still use today. “Ms. Hypes” was loved by her students for her kindness to all.
Alice had a passion for photography and cherished thousands of family photos. She also enjoyed working puzzles, hooking rugs, playing bingo, cooking, collecting elephant figurines, and babysitting the children in her family. A dedicated traveler, she explored many countries abroad and journeyed across the United States. Above all, she dearly loved her family—especially her treasured sister Betty Jo Hypes and her niece Trudy Blackwell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Betty Jo Hypes, Maude Canterbury (Henry), and Nelva Webster (Sam); her brothers Buford E. “Bud” Hypes and Peter P. “Pete” Hypes (Rachel); her niece, Bertia Elaine Hypes; and her nephew, Frank "Bucky" Blackwell. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Alice is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, Trudy Blackwell, Tammy McKinney (Clifford), Andrew Canterbury, Sam Webster, Petie Hypes (Miranda), Elizabeth Hypes (Jeff), Derrick Hypes and friend, Nancy Lilly.
The family extends special thanks to her nephew Dr. Sam Webster, Dr. Glen Crotty, Jr., Dr. Eugene Evans, Matthew Martin, her caregivers, and other family members who supported her throughout her illness.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Highland Avenue Baptist Church in Mullens, with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
