On July 6th, 2024, Alicia Cecily Pamela Ashwood answered the Master's call after a valiant fight against cancer. She was born on July 29th, 1987, in Cary, North Carolina, the second child of Alfred Doc-Eaton (Docky) Ashwood and Bertha Yvonne (Ashwood) Bull.
Growing up, Alicia developed a love for basketball, playing for her middle and high school teams. She won several championships and was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) on several occasions.
Alicia graduated from David W. Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina, as part of the Class of 2005. She was recognized as a Senior National Honor Society Member.
Alicia earned her Associate degree in Surgical Technology from Chattahoochee Technical College and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Informatics from Georgia State University, graduating in the top 5% of her class with three years of recognition on the Dean's List.
She worked at numerous prestigious hospitals as a surgical tech, the latest being Emory University Hospital. Alicia was passionate about her work and was inspired by her own experiences with her medical team, striving to provide the same level of care and compassion to her patients.
Alicia was passionate about social justice and dedicated much of her time to supporting cancer fundraising initiatives. Her commitment to these causes was a testament to her caring and compassionate nature.
Alicia loved life, but most of all, she loved her family, friends, traveling, sports-Rise Up Falcons!-and playing Spades. It brought her immense joy to be surrounded by her loved ones. She lived for moments of laughter, celebration, and being supportive. You could always count on Alicia to give the most thoughtful gifts at the right moment.
Her passion for travel was unrivaled. She loved to experience other cultures, especially the food and the beaches. The first thing she did upon arrival was get her toes in the sand and stare at the ocean.
Alicia's bright spirit and boundless love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering strength will continue to inspire us. She leaves behind a treasure trove of beautiful memories that we will cherish forever.
She lovingly lives in the hearts of her parents: Alfred Doc-Eaton (Docky) Ashwood of Winston Salem, NC and Bertha Yvonne (Ashwood) Bull of Freetown, Sierra Leone; sister: Desiree Alberta Ashwood of Charlotte, NC; Aunts: Gracie Williams, Gloria Dillsworth, Glenys Blyden and Janette Garber; Uncle: Eustace Bull Snr. Close family friends Olabisi Sesay, Rachel Deveneaux, Hazel Covington, members of her "tribe" Tymane Keene, Dominique Covington, Whitney 'Chelle' Gary and Alfred Simmons-Franklin. A host of other loving cousins, nephews, nieces, god children within the extended families of the Ashwoods, Whitfields, Malamah-Thomas, Nicols, Bulls, Blydens, Garbers, Grants, Williams', Dillsworths, and Jones'
We will miss you Alicia. Now rest in the eternal embrace of the Divine.
