Mrs. Ann Galehouse Sweeney, age 87, of
Mount Gilead, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Tuesday evening, September 16, 2025, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, holding hands with her husband of 67 years, John Thayer Sweeney. She was born on October 20, 1937, in Doylestown, Ohio, as the only daughter of the late John Stanley Galehouse (1908-1991) and Olive Irene Bowers Galehouse (1913-1995). Ann was the sister of John Stanley Galehouse Jr. (1936-2023) and Donald Edward Galehouse.
Ann was the mother to one daughter and three sons, and she loved spending time with her children and their spouses: Pamela Ann Sweeney, John Jeffery Sweeney and Pamela K. Sweeney (spouse), Todd Franklin Sweeney and Michelle R. Sweeney (spouse), Gregory Neil Sweeney and Yvonne M. Sweeney (spouse).
As a proud grandmother and great grandmother, she loved spending time with all her grandchildren and their spouses: Jeffery and Rachel Sweeney and their daughters Claire, Alaina, Taylor, and Faith; Kyle and Kristy Sweeney and their sons Jack and Caden; Colin Sweeney; Christin Sweeney; Ryan and Stephanie Sweeney; David and Erynn M. Mattera and their children Nico and Ramona; Craig and Rebecca Sweeney and their sons Leo, Jude, and August; Kevin and Cailey Sweeney and their daughters Eleanor and Marigold; John and Catherann Sweeney; Luke Sweeney and Vivian Hunter (fiancée); Alexis Sweeney; and Brett Sweeney.
Growing up in Doylestown, Ohio, Ann was active with family activities and sports. She played the clarinet in the high school band and also assumed the role of band majorette. After high school, Ann attended the College of Wooster and studied art, later graduating from The Ohio State University with an art degree. She became a resident of Mount Gilead in 1965 and eagerly supported her children's school activities, and she also worked in the family medical practice. As an active golfer, she participated in leagues and competitions while sharing her love for golf with her family. Later, she replaced competitive golfing with quilting and received several awards for her beautiful creations. Many of her quilts were donated to the children at the Flying Horse Farm. Ann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Gilead and was active with church activities such as the election night supper. Throughout her life, she enjoyed the century-old family cabin at Higgins Lake, Michigan. In addition, she and her husband frequented Naples, Florida, where they delighted in golfing and gatherings with friends and family.
Ann was a force who empowered others. In addition, she was a competitive person who liked a challenge and liked to see things done correctly. With a positive outlook and an infectious smile, she was always thrilled to hear a funny story and loved making others happy. Her excitement for life and perpetual optimism will live on in her family members and friends.
