Ann Elizabeth Weegar of
Waukegan, Illinois, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Lindenhurst, Illinois. She was born on April 29, 1946, in
Chicago, Illinois.
Ann never married and had no biological children, but she created family wherever she went. For decades, she was a deeply committed member of First United Methodist Church of Waukegan, which she lovingly referred to as her "family of the heart."
Ann devoted her professional life to education, spending her entire career with the Waukegan Public School District. She began teaching second grade in 1968, at a time when special education was only beginning to be formally recognized in Illinois and had not yet been mandated nationally. After a year of teaching, she entered a masters degree program focused while still teaching. Ann's classroom quickly transitioned into special education "study" as well as a practice-- a cross-categorical first-grade class.
In her classroom, Ann taught children who were deaf or hard of hearing, visually impaired, physically handicapped, learning disabled, behaviorally disordered, and intellectually disabled-often simultaneously, and usually without established curricula or formal guidance. When appropriate materials didn't exist, she created them. When curriculum had yet to catch up with need, she relied on her instincts and savvy to make exactly what was required in the moment. Long before special education was standardized, Ann quietly practiced it with patience, creativity, humility, and profound respect for each child she served.
Ann earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb in 1968, followed by a Master of Science in Education in 1971. At the time, no formal specialization in special education existed; Ann was among the educators who defined what the field would become through daily practice rather than policy.
Outside the classroom, Ann was active in her church in countless ways. She sang in the chancel choir for many years, played in the English handbell choir, served on the Education Commission, and reliably stepped in whenever help was needed-often responding to requests that began with, "Ann, can you…?" The foster children who briefly passed through her life did so through church-related placements, reflecting her quiet willingness to help where she could.
Ann's personal interests included bowling with her teachers' league, knitting, crocheting, needlework, ceramics, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and card games-where her competitive streak, otherwise well hidden, made a lively appearance. She was known for her intelligence, thoughtfulness, and insight, though she rarely put herself forward. Those who worked closely with her understood how perceptive and capable she was; those she served experienced her humility and kindness first.
Despite enduring significant physical and emotional challenges throughout her life, Ann rarely spoke of them. She believed strongly in not burdening others, and she carried herself with grace, patience, and resilience.
Ann is survived by the children of her brother, Paul Weegar-Deborah Canada, Denise Weegar, and Mark Weegar-and by her step-nieces, Jessica Hussey and Amanda Akins. She is also survived by her sister- in-law, Christine Weegar, who Ann knew from high school, but became family when Chris and Paul married. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m, at First United Methodist Church of Waukegan following the regular Sunday worship
service. Ann's funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by fellowship and a light midday meal. Ann will be cremated, and her ashes will be placed in the church's columbarium.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Christine Weegar at Ann's address. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Waukegan,
Habitat for Humanity, Waukegan Chapter, or
Doctors Without Borders. Ann Weegar lived quietly, served faithfully, and changed lives-often without ever knowing the full measure of her impact.
