Anne C. Symons, age 75, passed away peacefully as the sun was rising on the morning of January 30, 2023 at Accent Care Inpatient Unit in
Wilmington, Delaware.
Born Elizabeth Anne Carey on March 17, 1947, she was the youngest daughter of William Hazel and Pauline Elizabeth (Donovan) Carey. With her siblings Hazel and Larry, she grew up on the family farm in Townsend.
Anne left high school before her junior year to care for her very ill mother, later returning to complete her senior year. Upon graduating from high school, she was hired by the Bank of Delaware as a travel agent. At a holiday work party she met Richard H. Symons, Jr. (Dick). They were married six months later, and she gave birth to their daughter Leslie Anne before their first anniversary. Around the time of Leslie's birth, both of Anne's parents passed away.
Anne, Dick, and Leslie moved to 810 Woodsdale Road, Wilmington. Their son William David was born a few years later. The family enjoyed the friendships of many neighbors throughout their years at "810." Anne lived and cared for this home for fifty years.
As a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, PCA, Anne served in various capacities, including overseeing children in the toddler room, teaching Sunday school and VBS, leading Pioneer Girls, and hosting a small group. Later she and Dick became active members of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, OPC. Here she enjoyed preparing breakfasts for the Saturday morning Grace and Truth breakfasts.
When her young children went to school, Anne started working outside the home. For several years she was an administrative assistant for the principal of Wilmington Christian School before returning to the Bank of Delaware. Later she joined an independent mortgage company, working there many years before finishing her career running the law office of Martin Haverly.
A serious fall occurred in 2019, forcing her to retire, sell her home on Woodsdale Road, and move to Ingleside Assisted Living. There she was loved dearly by staff and residents-for which her family is profoundly grateful-until she was moved to hospice care on January 26, 2023.
Her husband of forty years, Richard, preceded Anne in death, as well as her sister, Hazel Carey and her cousin, Marie Mowery.
Her daughter Leslie Bustard and husband Ned of Lancaster, PA and granddaughters Carey, Margaret, and Elspeth survive her, as well as her son David Symons of Newark, DE and granddaughter Laurel, and life-long friend Richard Taylor Chandler.
Her fierce loyalty and loving heart for her family, as well as her courage in the face of hardships, her generosity to her community, and her enjoyment in cooking for others will be missed. Watching movies, wandering around Winterthur, as well as going out for lunches were favorite activities her granddaughters enjoyed doing with her. Friends have reflected on her kind and caring spirit, as well as her quiet faithfulness.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1006 Wilson Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, on April 1, 2023 at 11am.
