George Robert Taylor, age 92, of Newark, DE, died on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at home with his wife of 59 years, Catherine, by his side.
George graduated from Chester High School, and Pennsylvania Military College in 1960 with a degree in Business Economics. He proudly served our country in the US Army during the Korean War, being stationed at Fort Devon, Fort Dix, and in Okinawa, Japan. After his enlistment, George continued to serve with the VFW Honor Guard as a bugler, and has rendered "Taps" over 10,000 times in his lifetime. In his civilian career, he worked as an industrial sales representative starting with Rockwell and retiring with NIBCO.
George was a faithful member of Newark Evangelical Presbyterian Church since 1964 where he served as junior high Christian education, Boys Brigade, Ferris School ministry and as a Sunday usher & greeter.
George was also known to be an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies Fan. Go Birds!
Outside of work he coached youth basketball, baseball and football. He also coached high school girls track for Wilmington Christian School, Padua Academy, and Glasgow High. He coached boys track winning the indoor and outdoor State Championship at Hodgson Vo-Tech in 1996 and 1997. He volunteered as a track and field official for the Special Olympics as well. George also participated in track and field, competing in Masters events into his early 80s as a top-ranking participant in the region.
George is survived by his wife Catherine Liddy Taylor, sons Gene (Melodie), Robert (Debbie), and Neil (Ann Marie), daughter Liz Sharp (Charlie); and grandchildren Steven, Kyra, Zack, Ashley, Kai and Ty.
A visitation will be offered on Thursday, February 9 from 11 am – 12 pm at Newark Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 308 Possum Park Rd., Newark, DE 19711 with a funeral service at noon. Interment will take place privately at Delaware Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
