Anthony S. "Tony" Amatangelo, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025, in
Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Born in 1939 to Sylvester and Lucia Amatangelo, Tony graduated from Clairton High School in 1956 and went on to earn his degree from the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering in 1960. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career with Union Carbide, later Dow Chemical, where he dedicated 36 years of service before retiring.
Tony was a man whose life was defined by generosity, service, and deep commitment to his community. A longtime member of both the Lions Club and the Kiwanis Foundation, he gave countless hours to causes close to his heart. He co-chaired the Sourwood Festival in Black Mountain for many years and volunteered tirelessly with the Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM), where he also served on the board. His dedication extended to Western Carolina Community Action and the Western Carolina Nature Center-organizations he supported not only with his time but also through ongoing donations.
His faith was a guiding force throughout his life. Deeply rooted in Catholic tradition from an early age, Tony served on Parish Council in his youth and remained active in worship and service at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church during his later years in Hendersonville. He believed that love and service were the truest expressions of faith.
Tony's generosity reached far beyond formal organizations. He supported The SafeLight Foundation and St. Gerard House through charitable giving and personal involvement. Whether helping a neighbor or supporting a cause, Tony lived by example-quietly making a difference wherever he could.
An avid hiker with a love for nature, Tony found joy exploring trails and waterfalls with his beloved hiking group, the M&M Hikers. These adventures brought him peace and camaraderie that enriched his later years. Tony resided in Carolina Village and made lasting friendships with his neighbors.
Above all else, Tony cherished time with his family. He especially enjoyed outings with his daughter, Marcia (Amatangelo) Mitchell, and grandchildren, Lucas Mitchell, Abbey Mitchell/Haley Garcia and Caley Mitchell-sharing laughter over visits to local breweries, cideries, and wineries. These moments were treasured highlights of his life.
Tony is also survived by his son, Mark Amatangelo; sisters-in-law, Diane (Sal) Amatangelo and Kathy (Nick)Amatangelo; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. William and Suzy Pearson; sister-in-law, Judy (Jim)Cerasoli; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Jane Forte; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ian and Susan Chalmers; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who held him dear. A special friend, Sandy Williams, also shared a meaningful place in Tony's life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Allison E. Amatangelo; parents, Sylvester and Lucia Amatangelo; brothers, Nicolas Amatangelo and Sal Amatangelo.
Tony touched countless lives through kindness, humility, humor, and unwavering dedication to others. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him-and may we honor him by continuing the legacy of compassion he so faithfully lived.
