Anthony Leroy Sutton (June 1938-July 2024)
Anthony Leroy Sutton 86, of
Burnsville, Minnesota passed away at Fairview Ridges Hospital on July 22nd 2024.
He was born in Mississippi on June 14th 1938 to Leroy Sutton Sr. and Dorothy Cooper Sutton. He grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. Anthony graduated from Hirsch High School in Chicago and enlisted in the Airforce before earning his B.A.S as a Human Service generalist at The University of Minnesota. He received a certification in Radio and Television Broadcasting from the University of California. He went on to get his Masters degree in Stockholm, Sweden in Psychology. He worked with school children centering on building up their self esteem and conducted sensitivity training programs. While he was in Sweden, he authored Topics with Thomas and had a private practice as an industrial Psychologist. He translated for the court system. He belonged to the Swedish Psychology Union.
He returned to the US in the 1980's and worked as a substitute teacher, worked in sales, and authored Breaking Chains. He wrote curriculum for tech schools and assisted adults to use their skills and experience to earn a college degree, supervised research in educational testing and evaluation. He developed assessment methodology, originated the International bilingual business calendar for marketing. He translated business contracts from Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German and Russian into English.
Anthony volunteered at the prisons mentoring inmates, Minneapolis school system, in the pre-college opportunity program and the Black Learning Resource Center, City of Minneapolis. He volunteered as an election judge in Minneapolis for voter registration. He was on the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission, on Minneapolis Visitors and Tourists Bureau. Led a team of multicultural psychologists in developing a program for day care centers to help build self esteem for emigrant preschoolers. Until his health failed him he was a proud member of the Swedish Club and the Minneapolis Retired Teachers Association.
Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, two brothers, one sister. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, son Michael, daughter Cecile, brother Randy, sisters Gloria and Freddy. Those mourning his loss include: Kevin & Lisa Alexi, Ariel, Alex & Charlotte. Trevor & Chintia Liam & Amaya, Edwin & Michelle Trevor & Connor, Kerry & Amy, Dante, Ari, Kaden, Giovan & Stephanie, Taylor Rose, Jasmine, Josaphine, & Sophia. Brothers in law, Larry & Diane, Ricky & Theresa. Many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Private interment will be at Fort Snelling with Military honor service on Sept 3rd at 10:30AM
Commemoration of life will be at Virginia St Church, 170 Virginia St, St, Paul, MN 55102 @ 11:00 AM on Saturday September 7th. Catered hors d'oeuvres following in Fellowship hall.
