Arthur Anthony Van Slooten, age 82, died peacefully on Monday, October 10, 2022. He was born in Paterson, NJ where he spent his early childhood with his parents and brothers, before moving to Waldwick and Upper Saddle River. In his later years, Arthur moved in with his brother, David becoming a longtime resident of Mahwah.
Arthur attended local grammar and high schools, moving on to Montclair State, Seton Hall and graduating from Pratt University with a Masters in Library Science. During his career, he taught English and Latin in Hamilton Bridge High School and Ridgewood High School. Although he did not teach Spanish, Arthur spoke fluently in Latin and Spanish. Arthur also worked in the Ridgewood Library for many years, retiring as the Director of Audio-Visual Technology.
Being raised in a Roman Catholic family, prayer and devotion to our Lord was very important to Arthur. During his young adulthood, he wanted to enter the seminary to become a Priest, however, that was not to be, due to health issues. Arthur was a longtime parishioner of St. Luke's RC Church and currently, a faithful communicant of Church of the Presentation.
In his spare time, he would often be found attending an Opera or Ballet. Arthur attended many live performances throughout the Tri-State area and loved shopping in New York City for books
or publication relating to the Opera and Ballet.
When time permitted, Arthur could be found exercising his artistic ability, with a pad of paper and pen or pencil. He completed so many sketches and drawings, they are too numerous to count!
He also had a keen love of German Shepherds. His passion, love and devotion to all his pet German Shepherds was unwavering.
He is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Edith Van Slooten and his brother, Henry Van Slooten, who passed away last summer due to Alzheimer's Disease.
Arthur is survived by his brothers; Dr. David Van Slooten and Dr. Ronald Van Slooten and nieces and nephews; Ronald, Timothy, Johnathan, Brian, Courtney, Jessica, Michael, Amy, Gerri and Mary Kate.
The family will receive friends on Friday, 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur's memory may be made to Alzheimer's New Jersey, www.alznj.org, 425 Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland, NJ 07068.

Deepest sympathy to the Van Slooten Family.
Artie was a well versed, interesting and wonderful man who I will always remember, especially for his love of his German Shepard.
May Art rest peacefully.
