After reading a commentary on a Buddhist text this morning, and after hearing so many of Ave´s family members and friends talk last weekend about his lifelong desire to connect people it occurs to me that Ave moved through the world in the manner of a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva is not a saint (and neither was Ave) but, according to my reading, someone who serves others, someone `who has the power to spread happiness and confidence wherever he goes´. It´s hard for me to think of anyone in my life who more fully embodied this quality than Ave.

I wish I'd known Ave better -- he struck me as someone who was really vitally present in a way few are. Hamakom yenakhem etekhem betokh shaar avelay tziyon v'yrushalayim -- may the Omnipresent comfort you with other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

We loved Ave so much. He was one of the warmest, kindest and loving people I have ever known. As I collected some photos of him to post here, I was warmed by how consistently these images show his deep love of Ann, of his family, and of life. He was so special. We will miss him so much. https://photos.app.goo.gl/iWPozeyK6nsfp6tPA

Ave was the best person I have ever had the pleasure and honor of meeting, the world is a little less bright with his passing.

My world was knocked sideways last Thursday, as I suddenly lost my beloved brother Ave. He was on a bike ride with his bike club, one of his favorite activities in the world, when he had a heart attack, dying instantly. He is still very alive to me in my heart and soul, as I was just visiting with him a few weeks ago... it´s so hard to fathom that he is really not here. He has been a centering force in my family, managing my mother´s care during her long illness, running our family business after my mother couldn´t do it anymore, welcoming us always, with great pleasure, to his home for our family holidays. My little brother... who called me "It" when he was 10, who snuck into my teenage parties when he was 13, who girls had crushes on because they thought he looked like Jesus, who went with me to Woodstock when he was 16, who loved playing music and made a career out of it, who traveled in Europe with me in our adult years, loving to discover that Italian men were expressive and friendly, like him. He was a sweet, warm, emotional guy, loving to connect with people, asking everyone how their day was going, even the cashier at the grocery store or the toll-taker. He loved music, movies, TV, biking, podcasts, politics, audio books, walking, nature, friends, coffee, and, most especially, his wife and children. He was a big piece of me, and I can´t believe he´s gone. I will love him forever.

We miss you very much, Ave! You have been such a loving, supportive, and enthusiastic part of our family, and we will hold our memories of you very dearly. Around this time of year, we will especially miss listening to eclectic music with you, while we celebrate the holidays... you would be tapping away rhythms while you cook, or while we sit around together. Of course, the funny holiday hats would come out for a group photo! DJ and Forest loved spending time with Grandpa in New York and Denver, and even on an epic drive to Cape Cod. Thank you for loving them so much. Thank you for being a part of all of our lives. We love you!
