J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. of SharonBarbara Jean Altman, 74, of Sharpsville, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, February 12, 2026, in UPMC Jameson Hospital, New Castle.
Barbara Jean was born December 15, 1951, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Rev. William and Fannie Mae (Arnold) Scott. After attending New Castle High School, she completed her training and education at Wilmar Beauty School in Sharon, earning her certification in cosmetology.
Possessing a unique ability to put others' needs before her own, Barbara Jean worked as a caregiver at the Overlook Nursing Home in New Wilmington for many years. She also shared her love and talents with family and friends by taking many into her home throughout her life.
Her grandchildren were the center of her world. Barbara Jean was a constant source of love, grace, and encouragement for her 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She had a lifelong passion for gardening and also enjoyed spending time on her porch, sharing stories with her many friends.
She is survived by two sons, William “Billy” Altman, Jr. (Melissa Smith) and Charles Williams; three daughters, Ebony Paige (Arthur), MaryAnn Williams, and Jodi Williams; two sisters, Rosa Dammond (Amos) and Lawanda Jones; 14 grandchildren, William, III (Amanda), Tayonna, Mykel, Marquis, Andray, Tyrese, Sakwan (Ashley), Lannia (Brennon), Michael, Takeyah, Ramiero, Dewayne, Devonte (Shuarri), and Kevale; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Barbara Jean was preceded in death by her former spouse, William Altman, Sr., whom she cared for up until his passing; a sister, Mae Frances Wiley, and her husband, Butch; three brothers, Cecil, Larry, and Lawrence Scott, and two nephews, Richard and Peter Roye.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026, in Valley Baptist Church, 500 Sharon-New Castle Rd., Farrell.
A Home Going Celebration will be held immediately following at 11 a.m., in the church, with Pastor T. Harrison, officiating.
A procession and interment will follow in Morefield Cemetery, Hermitage.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
