Dateline: Alton, IL
Barbara Louise (Schwegel) Fallon, 85 years, passed away on September 15, 2025 in Montgomery, Texas.
She was born on January 23, 1940 in Alton, IL. to Peter Paul and Louise Julia (Hesse) Schwegel.
She graduated high school from Marquette Catholic High School in Alton, earned her college degree at the University of Texas in Arlington, and earned her Master's degree from the University of Colorado.
Barbara was no tourist in life and embraced it boldy. She was involved, dedicated, caring, tireless in her many pursuits. Her life led her to live in many locations away from her hometown of Alton. Many of these years in both Texas and Colorado. However, Alton was always her home. She was so grateful for being raised in a large, loud family with nine kids and much love. "Schwegels Everywhere" always came back to Alton to share their love and Barbara cherished this. She loved Schwegels everywhere, no matter where they resided and this family remained the centerpiece to her life.
The love and devotion for family she learned from the Schwegels was passed on to her four children. She raised her family demonstrating the values she so deeply held: love of family, appreciation for hard work, and relentlessly high standards. Her children appreciated most of this and respected all of it.
Barbara held many jobs in her life, including working for Congressman Dick Armey and the University of Colorado Health System. Her best (or was it the worst?) job was undoubtedly working for her son Mike as he built a series of emergency room clinics. Those who knew Barbara though, knew that while she never sought titles, she actually ran the place. She had a knack for being in charge.
Barbara was a beacon for the values she cherished. She deeply loved her country, the ideals upon which it was built, and the opportunities it provided. She displayed this love proudly and showed her dedication through tireless service in the Republican party. She embraced the obligations of "to whom much is given, much is expected" and lived this through constant service to those in need.
She pursued excellence in everything that mattered enough to be endeavored upon. When she arrived in new communities, she changed how these neighborhoods worked and played together. She managed multiple careers, and embraced with humility and pride, the importance of picking up trash. Someone has to do it and we all benefit. She lived this example.
Barbara will be remembered for many things. Foremost, her uncompromising high standards, her tireless commitment to what she held important, her service to others, her commitment to constant improvement, her bold views and her deep devotion to family near and far.
Barbara is survived by children, Tom (Shannon) Fallon, Beth (Kelly) Coates, Mike (Sandy) Fallon, and Sean Fallon; grandchildren, Riley Fallon, Nolan Fallon, Georgia Fallon, Audrey Fallon, Bryan Fults, Nick Coates, Amy (Andrew) Rich, Zach (Audrey) Coates, Emma Fallon, Sam Fallon, Tim Fallon, Tess Fallon, Andy Fallon; great-grandchildren, Millie Rich and Harrison Rich, siblings, Jim (Sue) Schwegel, John (Margaret) Schwegel, and Ed Schwegel; and a brother-in-law, Jim Gillett.
She was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Louise Schwegel; sisters, Carolyn Dooley and Mary Gillett; brothers, Bud Schwegel, Pete Schwegel, and Tom Schwegel; sister-in-law's, Carla Schwegel, Phyllis Schwegel, Maggie Schwegel, and Jeanne Schwegel; brother-in-law, Terry Dooley, and daughter-in-law Dana Fallon.
Funeral services will be held on November 15th, 2025 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Luncheon to follow. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to be made on Barbara's behalf to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.

I loved Barbara Fallon, unequivocally and unconditionally. I'm sure I'm not the only one, as she touched so many lives. This was a giant of a human being, gifted articulate, and capable in so many ways. Most of all, she was principled, with unshakable moral clarity and dedication to goodness and to life. I am so very sad that she is gone, but I hope all those she touched will do much more good to honor her memory.

This picture is one of my all-time favorites, and speaks volumes about her quiet power. The hand holding the small flag is hers, of course.
