BENSON-Barbara Mae (Bartholomew) Gearwar passed away Wednesday July 23, 2025, at her home in Benson surrounded by her loving family following a brief struggle with cancer.
Barbara was born October 3, 1944, the daughter of Frederick E. Bartholomew and Katherine (Kehoe) Bartholomew. Barbara grew up in Benson and graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School in 1962.
Following high school, Barbara married Prescott J. Gearwar and gave birth to two children, Christopher J. Gearwar and Lisa M. (Gearwar) Hewes. Barbara's passion was caring for others, as witnessed by her devotion to her family and her career path supporting individuals with Developmental Disabilities. Barbara enjoyed reading, watching her favorite television shows, and visiting the ocean each year with her sisters whom she had a very close relationship. Barbara was a loving, caring and loyal daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Survivors include a son Christopher J. Gearwar and his partner, Lori, of Benson, a daughter Lisa M. Hewes and her husband Ed of Benson, 2 sisters Mary Trombley of Fair Haven and Joan Ramey (Jon) of Middle Granville, NY, 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and extended Gearwar family members.
Barbara was predeceased by her sister Patricia Lotane on January 4, 2008, and her brother Robert Bartholomew on November 29, 2018.
A Catholic Mass Funeral will be held 11 am Wednesday August 6, 2025, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Benson.
Arrangements are with the Durfee Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Rutland Area VNA and Hospice.
