Dr. Barry Arnold Goldsmith departed this life on Sunday, May 18th in Bellevue, Washington at 89 years of age. Never much for a fuss, he slipped away quietly, between one breath and the next. However, his soft-spoken, studious demeanor belied a truly adventurous spirit and an unrepentantly joyous nature.
He grabbed life with both hands, whether it was heli-skiing far past the time when most would consider it advisable or retraining in new medical specialties when other surgeons would be considering retirement. His thirst for adventure carried him from a thriving medical practice and professorships in Chicago to positions with hospitals in Idaho, Alaska, and Colorado.
He loved foreign films and NPR and could laugh at almost anything, including himself. He had a huge heart – causing him to exchange medical care for a live chicken on more than one occasion. (No word on what happened to the chickens, but we strongly suspect that they too died peacefully in old age.)
He is survived by his children, Kevin and Cori, his daughter-in-law, Nicole, and his grandchild, Lily Sophia.
If you'd like to wish him well as he moves on to his next adventure, a memorial visitation will be held Saturday, June 14, 2025 from 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 pm at GL Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines, Illinois, 60016. Arrangements by G.L. Hills Funeral Home and Cremation Center. For information, please call 847-699-9003 or visit www.glhillsfuneralhome.com.
