R. Barry Koffel, 77, a long-time resident of Harleysville, PA, passed away Thursday morning, June 13, 2024, after an illness. He and his wife, Judy (Rutter) Koffel, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 11th of this year.
Born September 8, 1946, in Sellersville, PA, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Beulah C. (Metz) Koffel. He was a 1964 graduate of Souderton High School. A local building contractor for many years, he worked under the name of Koffel Builders until 2010. He then worked another ten years with his son-in-law at Holz & Henry, Inc. before retiring in 2020.
Barry was a member and past president of the Harleysville Jaycees. He was a 44-year member of the Harleysville Lions Club where he was a past president and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. This award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideals consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. He served as district governor of Pennsylvania Lion's District 14-R during the 1996-1997 term. Along with his wife, he became an immense advocate for the Lion's Leader Dog program where he served as the district representative for many years. Together, they raised a number of puppies for acceptance into the program.
Barry was a 32nd degree mason and a member of Shiloh-MacCalla Lodge #588 F.&A.M. in Souderton, PA, and served on the board at the Harleysville Community Center for many years. He coached little league baseball in Harleysville, PA, leading the Connie Mack team to win a state championship title in the late 1970's. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid golfer and hunter. His true passion was fishing, taking numerous fishing trips to a fishing camp at Lac du Fils in Quebec, Canada. He served many years as president of the camp where he enjoyed making a great deal of wonderful memories with both friends and family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barb Moyer and her husband, Ray, of Telford, PA; a son, Dan Koffel and his wife, Gail, of Perkiomenville, PA; and a sister, Bonnie Breisch and her husband, Charles, of Frederick, PA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Mason Moyer and his wife Kelly, Molly Luu and her husband Dustin, Nicholas Koffel and his wife Ericka, and Chase Koffel and his wife Katie; and six great grandchildren, Maddy, Joanna, Cassidy, Oliver, Lucy and Rissa.
Family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45 am on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Franconia Twp., PA, where the public memorial service will begin at 11 am on Wednesday.
