Bernabe "Barney" Valenzuela Quintela, 86, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2023 in El Paso, Texas. Visitation will be 1-6 PM, Wednesday, March 8, 2023 followed by a Rosary at 6 PM at West Funeral Home. Cremation will take place following the Rosary, then a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM, Friday, March 10, 2023 at San Jose Catholic Church with Father Juan Carlos Ramirez officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Catarina Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard.
Barney was born in Loving, NM on January 9, 1937 to Candido and Andrea (Valenzuela) Quintela. He was married to his wonderful wife Angelica "Angie" Ramirez in Carlsbad in June of 1960. They were married 62 years and 8 months but had been together 64 years.
Prior to retirement he worked for Skeen Furniture Company and with Dick Merchant. He was a hard worker and worked until he was 80. He also served in the Army National Guard; he was drafted in 1956.
He enjoyed his family, most especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed sports and was a huge San Francisco 49er fan and LA Dodger fan. He played baseball, managed baseball teams and was an umpire for several years. Barney also ran the score board and clock for the Falcon Basketball games in Loving, NM for many years and was also a Reserve Officer for Loving, NM.
He loved music and was the life of the party. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and was part of the board and served as an official. He played Santa Claus for our family and at his daughter Destiny's school, year after year. He was also PTA President at Hillcrest School for many years.
Barney was preceded in death by his infant son Orlando R. Quintela; daughter Yolanda M. Quintela; parents Candido and Andrea Quintela and several siblings.
He is survived by his wife Angelica "Angie" Quintela; daughters MaryLou R. Quintela and Destiny Quintela; 8 grandchildren: Raul Q. Garcia Jr., Monique Cota, Natashaw Cota, Keisha Toves, Alejandro Renteria, Elena Renteria, Angel Sanchez and Ruben Sanchez Jr.; 7 great-grandchildren; brother Arcadio V. Quintela of Carlsbad, NM and sister Andrea Baca of Rio Rancho, NM.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Raul Q. Garcia Jr., Alejandro Renteria, Ruben Sanchez, Nathan Vasquez, Kenneth Toves, and Jesse Molina.
