In Loving Memory
of
Bernadette Fontenot-Rubin
August 11, 1947 – April 24, 2025
Lafayette: Bernadette Fontenot-Rubin passed away peacefully at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in
Lafayette, La on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born on August 11, 1947, in Washington, Louisiana, Bernadette was the daughter of the late Clarence and Georgiana Fontenot. She was a woman of strength, elegance, and purpose-devoted to her faith, her family, and her community.
Bernadette shared 55 beautiful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Honorable Judge Edward D. Rubin. Together, they raised a close-knit, accomplished family built on love, tradition, and service. She was the cherished mother of Dr. La'Shon D. Rubin-Wilson (DeShun) of Arnaudville, LA, and Chanda R. Rubin-Hollier (Mireyou) of
Lafayette, LA. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Attorney Edward D. Rubin Jr., whose memory remained forever in her heart.
"Grammy," as she was affectionately known, found her greatest joy in her grandchildren: Skylar, Shelby, and Sydney Wilson, and Harper Hollier. She adored spending weekends with them, whether at the movies, shopping, or enjoying a good meal out. Her home was always full of warmth, conversation, and laughter.
Bernadette's professional life reflected her nurturing nature. She spent many years teaching at J.W. Faulk Elementary and Grand Coteau Elementary, before opening Primary Colors Daycare, a labor of love she ran alongside her daughter, La'Shon, for 17 years.
A woman of grace and intellect, Bernadette was active in both her spiritual and civic communities. She was a faithful member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, where she worshipped with devotion and dignity. She proudly served as a 54-year member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and participated in Women of Wisdom Acadiana (WOW).
Bernadette lived a rich life filled with travel, tennis matches, brunches, and deep, meaningful relationships. She will be remembered for her giving heart, her sophisticated presence, her loyalty to those she loved, and the quiet wisdom she carried.
She is survived by her husband, Honorable Judge Edward D. Rubin; her daughters, Dr. La'Shon Rubin-Wilson and Chanda Rubin-Hollier; sons-in-law DeShun Wilson and Mireyou Hollier; grandchildren Skylar, Shelby, Sydney, and Harper; her siblings Clarence "Butch" Fontenot (Ruby), Charles "Winkie" Fontenot (Iresia), Catherine "Cat" Tezeno, Linda "Faye" Osagie (Mickey), and Dell Fontenot; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother James "Tit Mouse" Fontenot, niece Chelsie Fontenot, niece/Goddaughter Georgiana "Papoose" Gallow, and her son Attorney Edward D. Rubin Jr.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Kinchen Funeral Home, 1011 North Saint Antoine Street, Lafayette, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
A celebration of Bernadette's life will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lafayette.
