Bernadine Thomas Stevenson entered this world on November 2, 1933, to parents Henry King and Sarah Thomas in Elizabeth, LA. Mrs. Bernadine Stevenson was the eldest of 10 children and raised in a loving home full of laughter, love and great cooking. Bernadine Stevenson was admired and respected by all who knew her, but especially her younger siblings who adored and looked up to their "Big Sister." One day while riding a bus, Bernadine caught the attention of a young man by the name of Woodrow Stevenson, to this union 9 children were born. Their union lasted for 45 years until Woodrow "Poppa Wood" received his eternal rest on December 2, 1993.
Bernadine began her relationship with GOD when she received the Holy Ghost on DECEMBER 7, 1972, at the age of 39. Bernadine's union with CHRIST spanned 52 years to the day of her homegoing celebration, what an awesome way to come full circle. At the commencement of her relationship with CHRIST, Bernadine became a member of Redeem COGIC (Church of GOD in Christ), under the leadership of Superintendent C.J. Jackson. Following the passing of Superintendent Jackson, she became a member of Magnolia COGIC under the leadership of Pastor Henry Sanders until his passing at which such time Paster Terrance Sanders became the Pastor. Bernadine remained at Magnolia until GOD called her home at the age of 91. Bernadine was a faithful member of Magnolia where she served in many positions such as Mother of the Church, Missionary and Usher.
Mother Stevenson was a staunch advocate for the Kingdom of GOD and could often be seen approaching strangers on the street to ask if they had a relationship with GOD, much to the chagrin of her family. If she had familiarity with them, the next question would be "When was the last time you been to church?" Mother Stevenson was an austere Woman of GOD whose presentation was "no nonsense." No one was safe from hearing about her Savior. Mother Stevenson did not veer from her ability to "tell it like it is" regarding GOD. She possessed a quiet spirit and was the epitome of class and elegance and forever represented herself as a woman of distinction. Besides her love for GOD, Bernadine had immense love for her 9 "plus 2" children and each and every one of her grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nephews, cousins and other family members. Bernadine was known by many nicknames such as "MoMo", "Dine", "Second Momma", "Mrs. Bernadine", "Nanny" and "MommaDear" to name a few. Bernadine was dubbed The Queen of Holiness by her nephew, Pastor Toby Sanders who along with so many others, had a front seat to the love Bernadine had for her LORD and Family, thereby providing the perfect moniker.
Despite a late in life diagnosis of Alzheimer's, Mother Stevenson would come alive upon hearing anything related to Gospel, especially the Spoken Word of one of her favorites: Bishop G. E. Patterson. She would begin tapping her head to the sound of music and would complete a sermon by hearing a few words. Mother Stevenson was well versed in the Bible and would answer questions with Bible scriptures when conversing with everyone and could recite a COMPLETE Bible verse without being prompted just by hearing one word. Mother Stevenson's favorite scripture was 2 Corinthians 6:17: Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the LORD, and touch not the unclean things; and I will receive you.
Mother Stevenson was preceded in death by her parents Henry King and Sarah Thomas, her brothers Bernell Thomas, Ottice King Thomas, Matthew Thomas, David King Thomas and Joe Nathan Thomas. She will be greatly missed by her 9 "plus 2" children, Woodrow Stevenson Jr (Cheryl), Sarah Elaine Keller (Henry Lee), Bernadette Jackson, Joanna Smith (Morris Jr), Janelle Ramsey (Hayward Sr), Joseph "QB" Stevenson, Deidre Scypion (Raymond), Rev. Sebastian Stevenson Sr (Donna) and Y. Pearl Jessie (Albert), in addition to two grandchildren Royce D. Wilkins and Y'Hnoree D. Foster; 4 sisters: Pearl Jean Sanders, Patty Jean Lee, Sarah Joyce Sampson and Lillie Ruth Lyons. Mother Stevenson also leaves behind to cherish her memories her 26 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren,12 great, great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mother Stevenson was Godmother to Roosevelt Redeaux III and loved by many, but especially the neighborhood of Waverly Street where she loved cooking and spreading love by providing cornbread dressing, rice dressing, greens, peach cobbler and her famous sweet potato pies. She passed her love of cooking to many of her children, including her son Joseph, who duplicates her meals at every opportunity. Mother Stevenson had a way of praying for you when asked, that allowed the individual to experience the anointing at the exact moment of prayer, and her prayers were always sincere and from her heart, and she would pray for you ANYWHERE at any time. Mother Stevenson was a frequent visitor to several churches in the community, especially the COGIC variety. One of the more frequented churches visited was New Day Deliverance Church where her longtime friend, Pastor E.M. Gladney presided until being called home to glory. Mother Stevenson continued to visit New Day and became fond of the presiding Pastor, Bishop Eldrige Charlot who reciprocated that fondness as well. Mother Stevenson also frequented Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the original location of Paradise Baptist Church because to her it was "just like COGIC."
Mother Stevenson was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 Woman and will be tremendously missed by her children, grandchildren, sisters, family, church members, neighborhood and the THOUSANDS of lives she touched with her spiritual words of wisdom. We will miss her Wonderful Fashion sense, her love of hats, her cooking and most importantly her compassion for everyone she interacted with. She left a WONDERFUL legacy and we, her family, intend to carry on the tradition. Mother is now in the arms of her THREE favorite KINGS: King Thomas, King Woody and KING JESUS! Take your rest Mother, it is well deserved.
