Loving husband of 70 years to Jane B. Bates; loving father of Susan (the late Robert) Huntley and William S. Bates; special former father-in-law of Merle Bates; adored grandfather of Rebecca (Sam) Ketelsen, Frances (Bryan) Schneider, and Katherine (Greg) Meyers; cherished great-grandfather of Emma, Gianna, Arianna, Griffin, Quinn, and Caroline; fond brother-in-law of Kay (the late Tom) O'Keefe; uncle of Robert, Michael, Patrick, the late Billy, and James O'Keefe.
Bert was an active member and Past Commander of American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 in Elmhurst. He also enjoyed fishing, photography, and spending time on the golf course. He was a graduate of Roosevelt University after returning from WWII. Bert had a long successful career as a purchasing manager for various metal manufacturers.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Elmhurst Community Funeral Home – THE AHLGRIM CHAPEL, 567 S. Spring Road, Elmhurst. For information – 630-834-3515 or www.ElmhurstFH.com.
