Bette Tompkins Benton passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 18, 1955, in Greenville, Maine, to Beth and Avon Tompkins. She is survived by her beloved husband of forty-three years, Jeffrey Benton of New Port Richey, Florida, her son Justin Tompkins and his wife Kate Tompkins of Standish, Maine, and her brothers Donne Tompkins and Mark Tompkins of Greenville, Maine. Bette very much loved and was well-loved in turn by her husband’s family which included her mother-in-law, Marie, three sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

She graduated from the University of Maine in 1978 and taught mathematics and science in the Maine school system for nine years. Later, she graduated from the Philadelphia Biblical University in 2005 with an MS in Christian Counseling. It was through her ministry and counseling women impacted by trauma that Bette realized her true professional calling.

Bette enjoyed downhill skiing and being in the outdoors. She possessed immense talents for cooking, fashion, and home decorating. She shared these talents entertaining friends in her home and planning soirees. She deeply loved animals, especially dogs. Bette was a great appreciator of the arts, particularly literature, music, and film. She took great delight in expanding her vocabulary and using eloquent language in conversation and writing.

Most importantly, Bette will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. Her profound faith and love for Jesus Christ defined every aspect of her life. Her courage and optimism in the face of numerous challenges and lifelong health struggles inspired all who knew her. Her strength and resolve were boundless. Her amazing sense of humor, biting wit, caring nature, and wisdom, alongside her stoic pragmatism in the face of any adversity will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She would have us place our faith in the Lord and be not afraid.

A memorial service for friends and family is scheduled for October 20th at 11:00 am at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine, followed by a celebration of life at the Lucerne Inn in Dedham, Maine. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that those wishing to send a gift donate to the Calvary Chapel Greater Portland in Westbrook, Maine.
