Betty Jean Benavidez, age 75, of Tucumcari, NM, passed away peacefully at Covenant Specialty Hospital in Lubbock, TX on Friday, August 15, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones after bravely battling cancer for 14 years.
Betty was born on October 3, 1949, to Manuel Cordova and Delfinia (Romero) in Tucumcari, NM where she grew up and lived most of her life. She retired from the City of Tucumcari Housing Authority after working as a bookkeeper for many years.
Betty met Zeke and her life changed forever. They were married on December 23, 1992, in Clovis, NM. Together they enjoyed their blended family, being together, traveling and working on their farm east of Tucumcari where they made their home. It became the gathering place for many family events. Her kids and grandkids loved being there, often helping her pick vegetables, playing cards, and eating ice cream sandwiches that she kept in good supply.
When we reflect on her life, we will think of her big laugh, her playful teasing, her love of good food and those daily Dr. Pepper runs with her sister, Myra. She loved gardening, being at home, bringing her family together and having cookouts. She felt that reading to kids was so important and enjoyed giving books as gifts. She was a true blessing to so many and will be greatly missed.
Betty studied the bible with the Jehovah's Witnesses for many years and was baptized in 2010. As she endured the effects of her illness, her faith and service to Jehovah never wavered. She will be missed by her many brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her spouse, Zeke Benavidez of the home; son, Eric Trujillo (Hilda Enriquez); daughters, Teresa Martinez (Chris), Maxine Lucero (Patrick) and Lisa Andrada (Steve) all of Clovis, NM; stepson, Charles Benavidez (Charlene) of Tucumcari, NM; brother Fred Cordova (Cindy) of Portales, NM; sister, Myra Borquez; brother, Manuel Cordova Jr., both of Tucumcari, NM; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Cordova and Delfinia Cordova (Romero); infant son, Ernest Trujillo and brother-in-law, Jimmy Borquez.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Kymera Independent Physicians in Roswell, NM; Cross Arrow Medical Clinic in Tucumcari, NM; Tucumcari Home Health; Joe Arrington Cancer Center in Lubbock, TX; The Hope Lodge in Lubbock, TX and Oklahoma City, OK; and Muffley Funeral Home in Clovis, NM.
A memorial service will be held on October 3, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses located at 1724 W. Tucumcari Blvd. in Tucumcari, NM.
