Dr. Dan Richard McKinney was born to Dan and Katherine McKinney on February 10, 1938, in Clovis, NM. He passed away on September 11, 2025, at the age of 87, in Bangor, ME. Richard was surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly. He always talked about his fun childhood. He spent a lot of time outdoors with his family. His trips fishing and caddying for his dad and attending a ceramics class with his mom are some of his fondest childhood memories. We have two of his ceramic pieces made in 1950 that proudly decorates our home.
Richard graduated from Clovis High School in 1956. He was avid sportsman. At CHS he was a member of the football team, golf team, Demolays, and The National Honor Society. Richard went to Baylor and then Kansas City Dental School. He graduated from Kansas City Dental school in 1964. Richard enjoyed school and learning. When Richard retired in 2016, he started woodworking. He made various wooden gift items for family and friends. Mostly with a New Mexico theme as he loved The Land of Enchantment. Bird houses and feeders were his other favorites he built.
Faith, family, friends, and love of America were dear to Richard's heart. His children tell fun memories of time spent with their Dad. Richard enjoyed traveling, especially finding out of the way golf courses to stop and play when he and Carol were on a road trip. Road trips were his favorite. Richard was loyal to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Richard met Carol, the love of his life in 1990. For the next 35 years "They had the time of Their Life."
Richard is survived by his wife; Carol of the home, daughter; March Fincher of Atlanta Georgia, son; Cash Mckinney (Jennifer) of Clovis, NM, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as daddy's girl Moxie Mae, he also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Richard is preceded in death by his daughter; Layne McKinney, son; Colt McKinney, parents; Dan and Katherine McKinney, and a sister; Joyce Lookingbill.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, 11:00 am with Pastor Brandon Boydston officiating at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton Street. Private Burial will be held at a later date.
