POLAND – Betty L. Kelley, 94, of North Main Street, and formerly of Military Road, Russia Corners, passed away on April 14, 2025 at the Abraham House in Rome.
Mrs. Kelley was born on December 25, 1930 in Syracuse, a daughter of the late John and Alice (Strong) LeFever. She graduated from Moravia High School in 1949 and Powellson Business Institute, Syracuse in 1950. She later received an associate degree from Herkimer College. On October 7, 1950, Betty was united in marriage with Giles W. Kelley at the Dutch Reformed Church in Owasco. Her working career included various jobs from running a nursery school, owning a locally famous hot dog cart and working at Country Classics dress shop where she often brought home more clothing than pay. She was last employed as a home caregiver at Seniors Helping Seniors until her retirement at age 87. Giles preceded her in death on May 12, 2010. Mrs. Kelley was a 50+ year member of the Tramp and Trail Club and Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, where she often attended jewelry making classes. Betty was also a poll worker for local elections for 49 years and missed her 50th year due to Covid.
Survivors include three children, Gileen (Allan) Morgan of Cazenovia, L. Pete (Cathy) Kelley of Humboldt, AZ, and Bradley (Marivita) Kelley of Cold Brook; a daughter-in-law, Pam Kelley of Bruce, FL; a sister, Emma (Albert) Andrews of Port Byron; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband Giles, Betty was predeceased by a son, Giles Kelley Jr. and six siblings.
In accordance with Betty's wishes there will be no public services. A private graveside service will take place at Middleville Rural Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In honor of Betty, the family asks that everyone take a moment out of their busy lives to do something that she would have loved, whether it is reading a poem, enjoying nature or having a glass of wine. Arrangements are entrusted to the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport.
Memorial contributions may be made to Abraham House, 1203 Kemble Street, Utica, NY 13501 or the Poland Library at P.O. Box 140, Poland, NY 13431.
