Much beloved, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and just this year, a great-great-grandmother.
Betty Wells went to be with the Lord on July 16, 2024. Having lived to 93 years old, this woman of so much love was surrounded by loved ones and had a day of special goodbyes with most of her gigantic family of 78 before passing quietly.
Betty was born on August 12, 1930 to Dora and Frederick Martin in New Britain, Connecticut. She grew up in Lyndhurst, New Jersey where at church she met a young man who would become her best friend, then husband, Raymond Richard Wells. They married in 1950. Ray predeceased Betty in 2017 and all who knew her know just how glad she is to be back at his side.
Betty lost her own dad at age 12 and had no siblings. She very much wanted to have a big family with Ray and did. They had six children: Thomas Wells (Carol), Holly Wells Tillman (Thomas), Peter Wells (Linda), Jeffrey Wells (Sherri), Kerry Wells Couldron, Juliann Wells Aman (Robert). Through these kids, Betty the only child, and Ray, with one brother, built a family that now stands at 78, with 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and all the beloved spouses.
Betty's life was filled with service to her family and her community. She worked many years with the Girl Scouts, the PTO, Woman's Club, Garden Club, becoming an officer of each organization. She lovingly supported her husband and traveled the world as a very able ambassador in support of his Rotary International activities. Although not a sailor herself, with Ray, Betty enjoyed years of service to the Brant Beach Yacht Club, in particular on the Race committee. Betty enjoyed knitting baby sweaters for the Women's Center, hospitals, and other charities. Betty loved most of all serving in her church, with more than 50 years in the choir, and service on the Consistory, Church Guild, Quilting Group, Friday Night Club and Annual Fair committee. She was a volunteer at Valley Hospital's Kurth Cottage, also for more than 50 years. Betty was not one to list her accomplishments. Her testimony was pretty simple, Betty loved the Lord and her church and her family unconditionally. She had many, many stories she loved to tell about her and her family. She taught and exemplified for everyone how to be a person of faith. She had a ready smile, cheery response and genuine concern and compassion for all she met. She will be sorely missed.
Family will receive friends on Sunday July 21, 2024 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 113 South Farview Avenue, Paramus, NJ. Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Monday July 22, 2024 at the Old Paramus Reformed Church, Ridgewood, NJ. Interment at George Washington Memorial Park to follow.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions in Betty's memory may be made to Old Paramus Reformed Church 660 E. Glen Ave, Ridgewood, NJ 07450 oldparamus.org

I only recently saw the loss of your mom. Aunt Betty was such an inspiration to me my entire life. I visited with her after my own mom passed because she was the next best thing in my life. I told her the last time I saw her that if I had a choice I would choose her as my mom. She liked that . Will miss you Aunt Betty rest in peace. Janie and Doug McBride

Betty was an inspiration to me, as she was to countless others. I had the joy of teaching her Bible study group in Palm Beach, Florida, when she spent the winters here. Her comments were always encouraging and insightful and right on target. Her presence brought joy to all within our Women of the Word Bible study group, including me... I look forward to seeing her in eternity, and my prayers are with every member of her family!

I just recently found out about your family's loss. When driving past your Mom's home during the Christmas season I realized it was dark. That's when I looked online and found the sad news. Both of your parents were dear friends of MY parents. I remember many Rotary functions and trips with them. Sorry for ts late posting, but I wanted to give you my condolences.

We all have special memories of Betty to keep close to our hearts, especially her faith and love for family. Personally, Vic and I loved her common sense, her sense of humor and her laughter.

On our lat visit to her Oradell home, we shared her five o'clock cocktail. She knew Vic preferred Scotch and she told us she learned to like Scotch because Ray received so many bottles as gifts, but no one else liked it, and she couldn't see it going waste.

We caught up on family news and we marveled at her recall of each member, where they were and what they were doing. She mentioned how we both grew up as an only child, we learned to amuse ourselves, and we had no fear of being alone. We laughed at how the younger generations had a hard time understanding us.

We will miss her sense of humor, her distinct laugh, and most of all her advice and prayers for us, as we now pray for her. We know God is smiling as he welcomes Betty and her sense of humor, creating a new bright star to smile down on us.
