LAVALE – Billie Joe Redmond, 91, passed away peacefully at Hearthstone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, October 29, 2021.
Billie was born April 1, 1930, to the late Charles Steven Redmond and Ruby Agnes (Mitchell) Redmond, in Powellton, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Ellen "Peggy" (Jones) Redmond; granddaughter, Shanna; and his siblings, Dorse, Walt, Jack, Harold, and Betty.
He was a 1948 graduate of Montgomery High School near his childhood home in Powellton, WV. He lettered in every varsity sport and was nicknamed "Red." His senior quote was "Why should the devil have all the good times?" Cited as the best dancer in the popularity contest, he also was a member of the student council and executive council. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He served eight years in the National Guard. He enlisted in the Marine Corps. and completed basic training at Paris Island and served at Camp Pendelton and Camp Legune.
Billie worked at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company for over 30 years as manager of staff and office services. He was a member of the LaVale Lions Club for over 40 years and was president of the club when their famous chicken barbeque got its start. He was also a 28-year member of the American Legion. He attended Centre Street and LaVale United Methodist Churches and served as an usher. He coached the boy's swim team at the YMCA and also coached the competition team at LaVale Swim Club.
His passions were travel, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He spent summers on the south branch of the Potomac River donned in his cut-off jean shorts tending his garden. Winters were spent on the beach in Florida and on Calabra. He was a true West Virginian who loved old, classic country music. Another endearing attribute was his contagious smile and sense of humor. Billie was also an avid Washington Redskins fan.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, MaryAnn Redmond; sons, Mark Redmond (Kim) and Doug Redmond (Martha); daughter, Diane (Redmond) Shriver; step-daughters, Taune Witmer (Jerri), Tara Linaburg (Danny), Carrie McKenzie; step-sons, Kevin McKenzie (Sandy), Corey McKenzie (Paula), and Curran McKenzie (Kim); grandchildren, Michelle Shelton (Brett), Nikki Burkett (Rob), Brock Shriver (Danielle Lasher), Cory Stout, and Jaclyn Stout; step-grandchildren, Morgan Witmer (Joey), Rachel and Claire Witmer, Lauren Bussard (Brandon), Emily and Kevin McKenzie, David and Dana Linaburg, Cody McKenzie (Britney), Corrine Wills (Shane), Payton McKenzie, Cameron McKenzie (Karie); great-grandchildren, Kyleigh, Brielle, and Steele Shelton, Chloe Burkett, Jackson and Savannah Bosely, Kelly and Wiley Shriver. He was also blessed with many step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, Monday, November 1, 2021, from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at 11 a.m. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
