BRADLEY ROBERT HAMMOND Brad went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 9, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. His faith held him through this time, and he was excited to meet Jesus.
He was born on September 23, 1943, in Albany, NY. He graduated from Russell-Sage College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Most of his career was in finance, later as a Principal Instructor for Software Applications for Oracle. After his retirement, he volunteered at Rex Cancer Center and later became a Substitute Teacher for Wake County Schools, working mostly with special needs kids, which he loved.
Brad loved music and especially singing. He was an accomplished singer, having been selected to and winning awards as a member of the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys at The Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, NY. As an adult, he sang with the Portland Symphony Orchestra for Christmas Concerts while living in Maine. He also loved to cook (a talent he passed along to his son, Doug).
Brad naturally looked for ways to help others. After moving to Scarborough, ME, he obtained his EMT certification and joined the Scarborough Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department.
Brad was a lifelong football fan (Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots), which created wonderful memories and bonding with his brothers and sons. In addition to being a high school wrestler and receiving scholarship offers, he played high school football and was in the band. During his high school games, he would play on the field, join the band for the halftime performance, and then continue playing in the games. Brad played semi-pro football in NY until he was 36, only retiring to coach his sons' youth football teams when they began playing. Brad and his boys share wonderful memories as season-ticket holders for many years at New England Patriots games.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge for over 35 years and made many special friendships there. Brad loved to make people laugh and will be most remembered for his dad jokes!
He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Back (nee Lewis); his brothers Brian, Ken, and Bruce Hammond and Kerry Back; and his late wife and the mother of his children, Sharon Hammond (nee Maybee).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Margie Smith Hammond; his sons, Doug (Marcie) and Jason; his grandchildren, Gabriella and Noah Hammond (Mackenzie); his stepsons, John Ferrell and Daniel Cooper (Christina); his step grandchildren, Amanda Ward (Joe), Lauren Johnston (Devin), Brianna and Kaytlin Dittl; Chance, Jordan and Logan Ferrell, and Menios Cooper; great grandchildren Raelyn, DJ, Callie and Kellen; his brothers, Keith Hammond and Brayton (Cabby) Back; and many nieces and nephews. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He also loved and adored Renee Bouziden, a very special friend who was like a daughter to him.
Brad's celebration of life will be Saturday, December 13 at 11 am at Hope Community Church, 821 Buck Jones Road,
Raleigh, NC 27606. Please feel free to wear your favorite football jersey! Friends and family are welcome to share memories of Brad after the service at Pat Murnane's Irish Pub in Wake Forest.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to SECU Hospice House, 426 Hospital Road, Smithfield, NC 27577; Hope Community Church, 821 Buck Jones Road,
