AHOSKIE, NC - Gary Joe Hammond, age 68, formerly of Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Born on January 23, 1957, in Greenville, South Carolina, Gary was the beloved son of the late Lawrence Wano Hammond and Robie Lee Higginbotham Hammond.
Gary dedicated a significant portion of his professional life to General Dynamics. Outside of work, Gary had a deep passion for jazz music and was an accomplished drummer. He enjoyed spending countless hours fishing and boating. An avid photographer, he captured the beauty of life's special moments through his lens. Gary loved his time on the golf course making his way to the Master's every year. Camping was always a must for time spent in the tranquility of nature.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Lawrence and Robie Hammond, and his brother, Robby Lee Hammond. Gary leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his sister, Debbie Olson, and her husband Jon of Grandy, NC; his nephew, Morgan B. Olson; his niece, Sarah Smith; his nephew, Ryan Hammond and wife Katie; and his great-nieces and nephews, Cody Gardner, Camden Smith, Troy Hammond, and Sadie Hammond along with his beloved fur baby, Tennille. In addition, he is survived by cousins, special friends, David and Mary Lou Balsor, and devoted caregiver Jeffrey Felton, in which the family deeply appreciates their love for Gary.
The family plans to honor Gary's life at a later date.
