Brian Denyer Obituary

Published by Prospect Memorial Funeral & Cremation Services on Jul. 25, 2016.
Brian Lindsay Denyer of Naugatuck and formerly of Watertown, Connecticut, died at his home on July 25, 2016, just three days shy of his sixty-ninth birthday, following a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Throughout his struggle, Brian maintained his dignity and positive outlook on life. Brian, called Lindsay by his birth family, was the beloved husband of the former Valerie Beardsley Brown with whom he shared thirty-nine years of marriage, and the loving father of three daughters: Karen L. Radford of Florida, Heather J. Denyer of New Jersey, and Emily M.W. Denyer of Connecticut. He was the son of Jean P. Denyer and Brian H.V. Denyer, both of whom pre-deceased him and the loving brother of Caroline J. Bradshaw of Virginia. Born in England and raised in Scotland, Brian moved to the United States to attend Amherst College where he received his Bachelor's degree. He began his professional career as a French teacher at the King School in Stamford. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Val. In the early 1980's, Brian, Val and their daughters moved to the Taft School in Watertown, CT where Brian taught French, headed a boys' dormitory, coached soccer, as well as squash and J.V. basketball over the course of his thirty plus years at Taft. It was also during this time that he earned his Masters degree from Middlebury College in Vermont. With a lifelong love of languages, learning and travel, Brian was the School Year Abroad representative at Taft and an active member in the local chapter of the Alliance Francaise. Following his retirement, Brian and Val moved to Naugatuck. Brian became active in his new community, volunteering at the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library and at the Naugatuck Senior Center during tax season. He also served as a volunteer driver for fellow patients at the Harold Leever Center in Waterbury for a time. He participated in the OLLI program at UConn in Waterbury as both teacher and student. He continued to travel and pursued his artistic interests through painting and writing poetry, completing over eighty oil paintings and many poems over the years. His artwork and a collection of his poetry can be found on his website: https://bldens.com. In addition to his loving wife Val, his three devoted daughters and his sister, Brian is survived by his son-in-law, James E. Radford, husband of Karen; Mike Zacuto, partner of Heather, his Aunt Barbara Henderson of England, four brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, as well as loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loyal friends. Farewell services are private and the family requests in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Brian to the International Myeloma Foundation at myeloma.org, Naugatuck Volunteer Ambulance, or Hartford Health Care Hospice. The Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect, CT 06712 is in charge of the arrangements. To place condolences please log on to www.prospectmemorial.com

He was an outstanding teacher and an even better human being. I was one of his students in French for a couple years a very long time ago. He was remarkably devoted to our education and well-being. His assessments of my unspectacular work in his classes were unfailingly fair but delivered in the kindest way possible. I am sure that there were moments when he was unhappy but I don't remember seeing them. I recall him walking jauntily through the halls, greeting everyone with a smile, and appearing to be perpetually happy. It was a privilege to know him and to be one of his students.

Dear Cousin Val & Family:
Even though I only met Brian twice over perhaps a 20-year period,
it was a great pleasure to have spent significant time with you both just two years ago on your visit to Florida, and I will always remember what a friendly,
polite, and modest gentleman he was.
Brian was a great example of how a man's life should be lived, and I remember my late Mom assessing him fondly as, "What a nice guy!"
May Brian's soul rest in peace and may God bless all of you as you recover from this loss.
Warmly,
Walter Legan

Dear Val, Emily

I am saddened to learn of Brian's passing.

I knew him from the Ct Support Group meeting. I met Brian about 4 years ago. I will remember him with a smile on his face and being so genuine and kind especially to a "newbie".

I am truly sorry for your loss and hope you peace. May he rest in peace.
Sincerely, Sally Mumford

I had the pleasure of knowing Brian for 5 days during a six month period of time, 2 years ago. His personality and kindness and warmth had such a positive effect on me and all of us who were playing Bridge at the Village at East Farms. I was a horrible player, yet Brian always made me feel differently. He even brought a Bridge CD Tutorial for me to borrow and download.
I knew nothing of his illustrious background, but he made an impression on me that will live on forever.
Imagine that---how softly powerful was his presence in my life for only 5 days!
I wish you his family my sincerest sympathy.

To Brian's Family,

I was saddened to hear of Brian's passing and my thoughts are with you. I knew him through the Friends of the Whittemore Library where his work on our Board of Directors was greatly appreciated. Brian was a very giving person always willing to help out wherever he could including serving as the president. His presence will be sorely missed but his contributions will not be forgotten..
