With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Suzanne Teresa Bendler, a remarkable woman whose life was defined by family, community, and an unforgettable spark. Suzanne entered eternal rest on Friday, January 30, 2026, at approximately 11:05 a.m., at the age of 82, after bravely battling an unfortunate illness. Born in
Derby, Connecticut, on March 16, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Irene Hardaswick.
Sue was the proud mother of three children: Irene Yocher and her husband, Gordon Yocher; Michael Bendler Jr.; and Victoria Bendler-Charles and her husband, Patrick. She was a devoted and cherished grandmother, lovingly known as "Nanny," to six grandchildren: Natalie Beecher; Lyndsay Forrest and her husband, Dan; Zachariah Bendler; Kaylee Yocher and her boyfriend, Tim Colli; Megan Yocher; and Tuckker Bendler-Reza Sr. Her legacy continued through her nine great-grandchildren: Abigail Beecher, Sophia Beecher, Melanie Dixon, Ryan Beecher, Amelia Vedder, Sora Bendler-Reza, Kataleyaa Bendler-Reza, Tuckker Bendler-Reza Jr., and David M. Colli. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law, Janice Hardaswick, and her nieces, Julie and Suzanne, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Besides her parents, Sue was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael Bendler Sr.; her brother, Vic Hardaswick; and her eldest daughter, Irene Yocher, whose passing in 2023 left a space in her heart that never truly healed.
Family was always the center of Sue's world. She rarely missed a special occasion or celebration, showing up reliably with a story to tell, a rolling belly laugh to share, or a watchful eye to make sure everyone was behaving. Her presence was steady, loving, and full of life.
Sue was a true cornerstone of her community. Alongside a close friend, she helped originate the Seymour Pumpkin Festival, playing a meaningful role in what would become a cherished local tradition. In recognition of her dedication and impact, she was honored as Grand Marshal of the Seymour Parade.
Her passion for youth leadership led her to be voted in as the Seymour/Oxford Chairman for the Girl Scouts, a role she carried with pride and purpose. Later in life, Sue found great joy volunteering within local school systems, tutoring and reading to young children. She was also a longtime member of the Red Hat Society, where she formed lasting friendships and remained actively involved in the community she loved.
Sue was a third-generation owner of the Old Tollgate Inn, affectionately known as "The Zoo," in Woodbury, Connecticut, where family history, hard work, and community spirit were deeply intertwined. Many nights were spent there, and countless memories were made.
She was known just as much for her personality as for her accomplishments. Sue's fierce sarcasm kept everyone sharp, while her big, beautiful brown eyes-often paired with a single raised eyebrow-were enough to let you know when you had crossed a line. She could impersonate Donald Duck better than anyone and had a lifelong love for Disney.
Sue celebrated life boldly, dressing head to toe for every holiday with costume jewelry, makeup, hats, scarves, socks, and flair. St. Patrick's Day held a particularly special place in her heart and was celebrated enthusiastically the day after her birthday each year.
Her love also lived in her kitchen, where she passed down cooking skills and treasured family recipes that continue to be shared around family tables today. Her stuffed cabbage and clam chowder were legendary.
Sue leaves behind a legacy of laughter, tradition, strength, and unconditional love. She was truly one of a kind and will be forever loved.
