Burchel Gibson, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, left this world peacefully on September 13, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, after a brief battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by the love of his devoted wife of 52 years, Jackie Gibson, and their son, Ross Garrett Gibson. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Marie Gibson, and his father, Kin Gibson.
Born August 28, 1953, in Knott County, Kentucky, Burchel's life was rich with commitment, creativity, and an unwavering love for his family. He was a 1972 graduate of Floyd Central High School and dedicated 30 years of his life to International Harvester / Navistar, where he worked tirelessly in industrial assembly. His industrious spirit not only defined his professional life but also spilled over into his personal pursuits. He was known for being a jack of all trades—an inventor, an artist, and a skilled craftsman who found joy in working with his hands. Whether he was building something new, capturing the beauty of nature through photography, or singing his heart out for others, Burchel approached every task with creativity and passion – hoping to lift the spirits of others.
In addition to his artistic talents, Burchel had a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life. He cherished his time spent at yard sales discovering valued bargains, and he delighted in collecting black walnuts and persimmons on leisurely days. His affection for stray dogs and his best friend, a trusty Kubota tractor, added dimension to a man who found happiness in the world around him. Burchel was a kind and gentle man, often gracing others with twinkling eyes and a generous smile.
Burchel was not just a father to Ross; he was a devoted family man whose proudest accomplishment was witnessing his family's growth and success. He was a loyal husband to Jackie, a loving brother to his sisters Shirley Dean, Rita (Larry) Harmon, and Wilma Richardson, as well as a cherished uncle and friend to many. His warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, leaving behind memories that will long be cherished.
Burchel's life will be celebrated at Newcomer Funeral Home in Southern Indiana, with visitation from 12:00PM to 8:00PM on Thursday, September 18, 2025. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 10:00AM. Burial will follow at 11:00AM at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
Burchel was a blessing to all who knew him, and his loved ones will forever carry the light and love he shared. His family would like to thank the dedicated medical staff at Baptist Health East, and especially Dr. Khalid Ghosheh and his team, for their kindness and quality of care during his brief illness.
