In Loving Memory Of
Burton Bates, age 86, of Mena, Arkansas, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025. He was a devoted husband, always supporting his wife Susan and her dreams. A passionate traveler, Burton explored numerous countries, yet his heart always belonged to his home, where he found joy in raising Brangus cattle and embracing farm life. His love for his cattle fueled his dedication to his work at VetCo Gray and GE, which took him across the world-from the fires of Kuwait to the tundra of Alaska.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Burton had a deep appreciation for nature and adventure. His travels led him on African safaris, including visits to Kruger National Park, as well as exciting journeys throughout Europe. Despite his wanderlust, family was his true anchor, and he always returned home to cherish special moments on the farm. He had a remarkable way of honoring his loved ones, never missing special family occasions and ensuring his wife received a single rose every week throughout their life together.
Born on July 5, 1938, in Bay City, Texas, Burton was the son of Morris Sylvian Bates and Lola Bell Grimes Bates. He grew up alongside his brothers Jimmy, Fred, Sidney, Earl, and Lee Roy Bates, sharing a childhood filled with strong family bonds. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; his daughter, Sherrie Bass; grandson Brandon Bass; step-son Brett Smith; step-grandson Logan Smith; step-granddaughter Jordyn; step-great-grandchildren LJ Neveah and Jaxton.
Honoring his wishes, Burton will be cremated, and his ashes will be scattered on his cherished cattle farm, the place he loved most.
