Caesar Augustus Carrino (born Cesare Augusto Carrino) passed away peacefully at age 93 with his family by his side. Caesar was born in 1931 at his home in Wadsworth, Ohio, and resided his entire life within 1000 feet of his birthplace, with the exception of the four years he was in college and his two years in the Army.
Caesar's early life was one of hardship. He lived his entire childhood during the Great Depression and his teen years in World War II. He spoke only Italian until he started school at Wadsworth Centralized (later renamed Isham Memorial). He credits his early experiences as giving him the resilience to withstand failure and giving him a goal and a hope throughout his life to achieve, always feeling that he had more to give.
He graduated from Wadsworth High School in 1948, and then from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1952 with a major in elementary education. After college, he was drafted into the Army and served his time at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, working as a chaplain's assistant, where he developed his lifelong practice of daily Mass attendance. He believed that his deep faith guided his path to whatever success he enjoyed.
After his discharge from the Army in 1954, he was hired by the Norton City School District, where he soon became principal of Sherman Elementary and Grill Elementary. He earned a master's degree from the University of Akron, and then a Ph.D. from Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve) in 1965. Soon afterward he began teaching at the University of Akron, where he worked for 22 years in a variety of roles including Assistant Dean of the College of Education, Dean of the Evening College and Summer Sessions, and Special Assistant to the President.
He retired from the University of Akron in 1989, but although he was good at so many things, he was terrible at retirement. His long list of post-retirement employers included Sacred Heart School, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, Holy Family School, Walsh College, and Sts. Peter and Paul School. He served on many boards, wrote books on local history, and hosted the cable show Wadsworth History on Film. From 1999 to 2003, he was Mayor of Wadsworth.
He was as comfortable using a backhoe as he was speaking to crowds of people. He retained a lifelong connection to the land, planting a vegetable garden every year of his life. He had an extensive workshop and took pride in making things.
His greatest love was for his family-Lynda, his wife of 61 years, his three children and their spouses, and his six grandchildren.
Caesar is preceded in death by his parents, Raffaele and Concetta, and by his three brothers Chris, Frank, and Henry. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lynda, his three children Michael (Marji), Christine (Rajeev), and Gerard, and his grandchildren Alexander, Sophia, Gabrielle, Max, Nicholas, and Georgia.
Friends will be received 2:00pm – 8:00pm Monday, March 25, 2024 at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St. Wadsworth, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00am Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 272 Broad St., Wadsworth. Interment with Military Honors will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Those who wish to remember him with a donation can give to the Dr. Caesar A. Carrino Scholarship in Fine & Applied Arts at the University of Akron (), or to the Wadsworth Area Historical Society ().

Dr. Carino had the biggest impact on me in my teenage to early adult life. He was a wonderful role model as a father, husband, and servant of the people. He was impressive and larger than life, yet down to earth. His laughter filled the room and could touch your heart. Dr. Carino had a special soul who touched countless lives and will be foundry remembered by us who were blessed to have spent time with him.

To Lynda and family,
Caesar was a dear and wonderful friend. We met through the Wadsworth Community Choir and developed a long friendship based on kindness and care for each other. Caesar wanted to be of any help he could be to my family....whether it was assisting with job searches, giving us knowledge of Wadsworth or helping with an adoption in our family. He was never impatient or troubled by anything. He embraced my entire family and always checked on us. He was thrilled when my grandchildren were born and he was saddened when my parents passed. I wanted to learn more about Caesar, so I asked him lots of questions about his past, his siblings, meeting Lynda and his children. He was someone I could listen to all day and never tire. I wish I had met him earlier in my life, so I could have learned even more. I will miss our conversations most of all. His devotion to Lynda touched us so often. Caesar and Lynda welcomed us into their home and my family will never forget our visits and our talks.
You are all in our hearts, thoughts and prayers each and every day.
Caesar will be missed by so many people. I know my heart will never be the same.
Lovingly, Robin, Sarah, Noah, Alex and Aurora.

I was fortunate to have known Dr Carrino from a young age, and saw him often with my parents at various family or Italian Council events (or as our pronouncer at spelling bees). When the time came for me to choose my college route, he provided me with the mentoring and wise advice which he gave to so many others. My route to a long career in medicine is, in no small part, thanks to Caesar. He was a true "Renaissance Man" who constantly served others, and his legacy of giving will go on through all of us he guided. May he rest in peace. Bravo, Dr Carrino-Well Done!

My deepest sympathy to Lynda and Dr. Carrino´s family and large network of friends. I met Dr. Carrino while he was the Dean of the U of A Evening College and I was working my way through evening courses to achieve my undergraduate degree. He was a huge supporter of the "non-traditional" student. He was a wise and gentle man, consul and friend. I became a better person through our friendship and his example.

Dr. Carrino was my elementary school principal. The time was the 1950´s and Sherman was his first teaching assignment following his Army service. It was also a time when fear of bombs from Russia was prevalent. One of his assignments involved being in charge of outside recess time. At the blowing of his "whistle " everyone was to immediately freeze from whatever they were doing. When he said "hit the ground" we were immediately to fall flat on the ground and cover our heads with our hands. Though he was very concerned for our safety, he also had a fun side and he would play music over the loud speaker and we would polka. Amazing to me that a young single man recently serving in the armed services would be so devoted to elementary students. He knew everyone and made you feel very special. I have corresponded the past few years with him and have been amazed at his memory and interest in what I was doing today. He was an exceptional person.

On weekends our family would get together for a Sunday supper with with my Aunts Uncles and cousins which I looked forward to and every time I would see my Uncle Caesar he would pinch my nose Hard ! He was a very good man and father and I wish I could´ve spent more time with him but unfortunately my family moved far away from Ohio and regretfully I had to move with them losing contact with all my Aunts Uncles and cousins. Rest in peace Uncle C. Say Hello to my Dad Chris

My mother was one of Caesar's grade school teachers and neighbor from the farm up the road. She took great pride in seeing his successful career in education and life in general. We will always be thankful for Caesar speaking at her funeral. Our sincere condolences on the passing of a wonderful man.

Jerry, I´m so sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was an amazing man who inspired everyone. He always had such a big presence and made you feel so important. My mom and dad always had such a great respect for him. The world is a little less grand without him.

Even though I was younger, I knew Caesar in high school. When my oldest started to Sherman school, he was the principal there, Over the years I had many conversations with him about various subjects, at which he was a master I might say. My very deepest sympathy to Lynda , their sons and daughter-in- laws and grandchildren. He's definitely going to be missed.
