Candace (Candy) Tice passed away at her home in Wall Township on March 26, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was 74 years old, leaving her family and friends much too soon, and with a space that cannot be filled.
Candy was born in Brooklyn, NY to Henry and Ruth Weil. She grew up in Westwood, NJ with her parents and siblings Carolyne, Bill, and Alison, completing high school there. As a young adult, Candy lived in several states before settling in Manasquan, NJ with her two sons.
Candy was fun and she was funny. Her sharp and funny wit was part of her charm. She had an infectious vitality that came through in her work, her hobbies and when she was with her friends and family. Candy had the energy to challenge herself. She spent 25 years in the legal field as a paralegal or legal office administrator. After that she brought her talents to the corporate world where she served as an executive assistant before retiring in 2012. During that time and while raising her two sons, Candy decided to become a runner. She participated in many Spring Lake Five Mile Runs. She ran a half marathon in preparation for the big race, the New York City Marathon, which she completed in 1988 and 1989. She also managed to find time to travel with friends to France and to Italy as well as within the US and enjoyed foreign cooking classes at the Cordon Bleu. Candy also enjoyed going to the beach in Spring Lake with a good book to relax from her busy schedule.
After retiring from her legal and corporate career, Candy found her true calling of being a Master Gardener through the Rutgers Master Gardener Program. Anyone who knew Candy was aware of her talent for gardening, the beautiful gardens that she created for her home and her passion for sharing her knowledge. Candy spent the last 12 years of her life educating adults and children about the fundamentals of plant life, the importance of pollinators, how to support the life cycle of butterflies and their habitat. She found her happy place to do all of that with the Master Gardeners and while working at Barlow's Flower Farm in Sea Girt. As part of the Barlow customer service team Candy escorted busloads of people to the Philadelphia Flower Show, the New York Botanical Gardens and Longwood Gardens, sharing her knowledge and passion for all that gardening encompasses. She also gave seminars and enjoyed her role as a community educator. Candy loved her Barlow "family" and so appreciated their support through her illness.
Candy was predeceased by her parents Henry and Ruth Weil and her sister Carolyn Weil. She will be so missed by her loving and devoted husband John Schanck; her son Ray Mockridge of Wall, NJ and her son Charles Tice and his wife Jessica of Brielle, NJ as well as her beloved grandchildren, Abby and Trevor. She is also survived by her siblings Bill Weil of Union, ME and Alison Brant of Toms River, their children and grandchildren, her brother-in-law Don Douglas of Springfield, VA and many nieces and nephews. Candy is also survived by her brother-in-law William Schanck and his wife Gail Haulenbeek of Delmar, NY and brother in law Raymond Schanck and wife Jackie of Wall, NJ.
A celebration of Candy's life will be held at Orender Funeral Home, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ 08736 from 1:00pm-4:00pm on Friday, March 29, 2024, with a service to start at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Candy's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2310 Route 34, Suite 1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736. I´ve known Candy virtually all of my life. Our fathers were best friends in high school. Most Sundays in our childhoods, our families had spaghetti dinners together. We stayed in touch through early adulthood, then picked up again in the 2000s. The picture is the two of us, in her backyard- which backed up to Westwood High School. She was about 8 and I was 6. I will miss her!

John, I am so sorry for your loss. When I saw Candy in October, she felt that she was going to beat it. Jim Hickey and Candy are in this photo I am going to post from last fall. May God Bless you ... Tony Moscato

As an 2014 intern for the Master Gardeners, whenever there was an opportunity that needed volunteer presence, Candy would turn around & stare our class down at the general meetings. Those eyes usually persuaded at least one of us!
She was a presence in our first "Plant A Row" endeavor always encouraging & helping us to learn.
She was truly community.
